EFP Discussion for June Entries

Good Morning fellow BP'ers and Contestants :)

Even tho I haven't been entering anything lately, I have kept up with the EFP Watch thread. I would like to host a NO-EFP thread..lol...seriously.

Knowing that we occasionally get "off topic" and realizing that the OT subject is normally due to the frustration with, lack of, encouragement for - EFPs - I thought I might host a monthly thread for those EFP watchers that would like to comment, off topic, on their success or lack of and for those that would like to share their stories and offer encouragement.

I would also love to see posts of the images that we submit that leave us scratching our heads as to why they didn't get an EFP.

So why not, every month, do a Sister thread to the EFP Watch? Anyone game? I would love to host it and I hope, have my own images here soon to share (believe me, I need it!!! )

This would be an additional opportunity to offer those BP friends that participate with us to also request critique and suggestions? My participation in everything lately has been minimal at best, due to legal issues I am dealing with. I would love to help my friends here at BP in any way I can.

Interest???

Susan, I like your idea and will participate here also. I understand how important it is to stay on topic for those with limited time and focused interest. But for those of us who need some encouragement or deeper need for understanding, this will be a terrific thread. Thanks.

Sarah G   I saw this and quite literally started LOL!!!

When I first came on the site I got lots of EFP's. The longer I'm here and the more I learn the less I get.

The community is great though. I've learned alot and I love keeping up with my BP friends.

I do submit to the free contest occassionally, but I certainly don't do it for every photo I put in my gallery.

I have a free gallery too. I figure my photography is worthy of a better gallery when I "win" the upgrade. I figure I'll most likely I'll always have my free one. LOL!!!!

I'm tagging this thread too. :)

Ok, I'm game! Here are two that I was sure would garner an EP, but did not. Other images this month that I thought were so-so, did get EFP's. Go figure...

Hmmm...I thought I could attach images from my gallery but I guess not...and since I'm at work (shhhhh) I cannot re-upload them here. SO -- the titles are One Fine Day and Martha Martha Chapel.

  Good thread, Susan!

I almost always can tell why my photos don't get EFPs. Usually if it's technically good, it's just not very interesting. :) Or maybe there's something technically off and I can't really tell what--over-sharpened or over-saturated. Pretty often, I kind of know that it's not a stellar photo when I upload it, but I'm in a hurry to enter the contest.

I don't know if I'm able to judge other people's work as accurately--but I think this thread could be really useful, if we upload photos here and get ideas from others about why they didn't get EFPs.

Yay everybody and LOL Les! These will be the two threads I keep up with too.

I have to say though, that when the EFPs stop for a time, the conversation on the Watch thread is just awesome! More entertaining than anything on TV..lol. Wouldn't want to miss that for the world.

Cary, I don't think we'll ever figure out the process for EFP selection, but we certainly can vent a bit about our own work and in the process pick up some new ideas or another point of view.

My tidbit that I wanted to add was the times when I have seen improvement in my photography often occurred after I had stepped back or even away from it for a bit. For me, that was more because I was entering everyday and when that pressure existed, I would submit pictures that weren't my best, just to get an entry in.

I know of a few folks that challenge themselves by creating entries for each category every month. I haven't done this myself, but I know it would force me to go outside my normal "comfort zone" and that might be a good thing to try for anyone feeling stuck.

I have a couple hundred pictures I've taken over the past month or so that I just haven't worked on. I'm excited to get back to it and miss it terribly :(

Ok I'm off to look at Deb's entries.....

Colleen, I'm not so hot at critiquing either but I'll usually give it a shot if someone asks. Usually I can go by the one thing that first catches my eye when I look at a picture. Sometimes, that first thing isn't what the photographer intended such as with a distraction. For me, I usually can't see the forest for the trees in my own stuff...lol.

I never thought my first win would be for the 3 WalMart cups (lol). Neither of the two shots got an EFP the first submit. (And Les pointed out gray spots on one that I had missed!) It was on a re-sub the next month that the one got the gold. And man was I shocked!! But happy :) I emailed everyone I knew...hahahaha! So it took me 2 years to get a Gold. Hang in there!

I'm going to have to figure out how to post a pic at the top like Cheri does. Except I should pick one I'm sure wont' get an EFP. But wait, aren't those the ones that do? :)

I think this is a wonderful idea Susan! You don't see me often in the EFP thread because usually by the time I go to share one I got, someone has alredy posted the category for that day. I do thoroughly enjoy the camaraderie there, and will enjoy it here too I'm sure!

Deb, you have a beautiful gallery and I were you I'd be doing LOTS of resubmitting!

Hi Wendy, I didn't get an email about the cash contest specifically, but it was mentioned in the latest Snapshot newsletter. Maybe they just sent the email to people who'd entered it before, or had unused credits.

I guess I'm not surprised they're "putting it on hold," but it's too bad--I had a dream I'd win some money in it some day. Sort of like my dream that I'll win the lottery some day. lol

Let me tell you a story about the cash contest and my last entry..

A few days ago I took a picture of my daughter Noelia, the edited one was good but not great. I asked some help to my friends at 101, First Doc give me a great comment because I wasn't so sure about the category to enter it. Te next day I though to enter it in the cash contest and Susan Fox was so nice in helping me with some wonderful advice for some important details.
When my picture was ready, the "Enter it in Cash Contest" link disappeared. By the next day the link was back, and received a mail telling me that the cash contest will be on hold. I was so lucky to have one credit left, just one, so I enter the picture.

I mentioned on the other thread that I got a reply yesterday from Karen re: the lag in EFPs. She said they don't normally discuss the details of the contest (which we knew) but she imagined the judges were busy. :)

So maybe that's why they're putting the cash contest on hold--it was too much to judge that *and* the free contest.

Sorry to get a bit off topic - but has anyone else noticed that when you go to your member center and click on your "favorites", and then go to your favorite photog's galleries area - that all of them are saying "Basic" instead of "Premium" or "Pro" or whatever? Is it just mine that's messing up? Could they have been having computer problems and that's why they are so far behind, because my gallery has been acting a bit weird since the EFP started rolling back out.

I agree, it does sound cheap. And you can ask my husband, I don't come cheap. Anyway, I've actually been considering upgrading to a Deluxe, but I'm still delusional enough to think I might win one.

Did you guys get the survey from BP to fill out regarding the contest and the changes that are being considered? I filled mine out and returned it yesterday. One possibility mentioned in the survey is limiting the free contest to those who have taken a class or who have purchased a Deluxe or Pro site. Another possibility is to limit the number of entries per person per month. All of this spells (to me anyway) that they are overwhelmed by the number of entries and it's just too much to keep up with it all. Not rocket science, I guess -- I really feel for them trying to do justice to the initial round of judging for EP's with the thousands of entries each month. Mind boggling, to say the least.

"Looks like they are changing the name of the premium to basic. Premium sounds better. Basic sounds cheap."

In the survey I filled out a few months ago, there was a fairly big section on choosing which 4 names sound best together for various levels. There was Basic, Premium, Deluxe and Pro, but they were getting opinions on others too that I can't remember. Oh, maybe Standard, Ultimate ... Anyway, it was pretty clear they were thinking of changing the terminology, at least.

My survey didn't include anything on the contest, though.

It will be *very* interesting to see what changes they make to the contest(s)!

By the way, for those of you on the fence about getting a Premium or Deluxe site, I say go for it! I think the prices are really reasonable and it's worth it!

I received the survey about the contest yesterday. The gist of the whole thing is about the contest as someone mentioned above. I said I would be out of here if they made the contest exclusive. I also said that the daily visits to enter and comment were the strong points of this website and to limit entries would sound the death knoll of BP.
I am wondering who else got this survey.

I have not taken any BP classes, and my Premium gallery (now "Basic" gallery, I guess) was awarded a few months ago with a 2nd Place win....AND I have never gotten a BP survey by email. (so, maybe they are just for paying customers) ;-)
Brand new members, who use the single image uploader, may not be getting EPs if they follow the advice listed on that form:

"Upload New Photos
You have chosen to upload 1 photo . We recommend that you upload photos in the JPEG format, no smaller than 1600 pixels on the long dimension."

("no smaller than 1600 pixels"?! To avoid resizing, I limit mine to 720 pixels)

I purchased a premium/basic gallery initially, then won a year extension on it... And I do the same as you when sizing my images and limit to 720 on the long side. I do not have one of BP's websites though (with domain & hosting, etc) and I have never taken a class here. Want to, but haven't because I can't afford it at the moment. :-)

Taken a few classes, but didn't get a survey.

It seems there should be some way to make the contest easier on the staff and judges while still keeping the majority happy.

Going through 30,000 photos a month must be daunting and I could see staff getting burned out over it. I love looking at photos, but no way I could look at 30,000 month after month.

I think the contest should be open to all but maybe allow fewer entries for people who haven't paid or taken a class. Something like so much per year for full access to the contest, as in daily entries. And a limited amount of entries for free, like around 10.

I know that isn't ideal since we are all used to it being 100% free.

Or still keep it all free, but with fewer entries for everyone.

There is no simple solution I guess that would make everyone happy

  Just a thought.
BetterPhoto is a business. If they are trying to assess the "cash" value of the free contest as it is structured now--and this seems a reasonable thing to want to do--what is wrong with their being selective in terms of the survey recipients? Why not ask those people who are bringing significant money in to the business what it is that keeps them at BP?
I have a premium/basic gallery which I renewed last January, and I consider it a bargain--I would have been happy to pay $25 or $30 dollars for the renewal. I have not yet taken any classes. I did not get the survey. I would have been happy to complete one, but I don't feel inappropriately left out, either.

I was just thinking out loud. I am not saying they should limit the number or not :-)

Seems the contest is too popular as is to change without upsetting a lot of people.

I think there is a large jump in the number of submissions once they started with the EFPs, not sure that is what they intended :-)

my nickel's worth here - never have been able to afford a class yet, bought my first betterpholio at $22. then had 2 second places... no deluxe gallery either ... and certainly never have had a survey (they probably know better than to send me one) - I have had very few eps lately, and no finalist in ages. I have done the cash contest 2 times( with 5 entries), will pay the $22. again if need be .... and would do the cash contest again... I also want to enter the free daily if I am so inclined!

I did not receive the survey, and I have taken one class and have a basic/premium gallery. I can understand if they are overwelmed with entires and want to try keep everyone happy and also make efp's more managable. What ever they decide I think they will be fair. :)

The survey I got was for people who'd taken a course--that's what it said, anyway. I don't know why others who took courses didn't get it. And I received it before I'd bought my Deluxe Website, for whatever that's worth.

And Cary, I don't understand that uploading recommendation of "no smaller than 1600 pixels on the long dimension." I've been meaning to ask about it. Seems like a typo, if they told us to upload at 720 before. (And why no *smaller* than 1600 pixels?!)

Kathryn this is the last month for the contest. So if you wanted to enter one more time you'd have to do in the next few days :-)

I always upload at 720 on the longest. Anything longer than that and the images always looks soft.

Wow - now this was a very fast response from BP about the gallery name change. I just emailed them about it today @ 11am CST.

"Thanks for you inquiry regarding changes you are seeing on the site. Don't worry, nothing is changing regarding your gallery or galleries of others. We are simply changing some of the terminology of our products in anticipation of a new product that will be available in the future. Galleries that used to be called "Premium" are now called "Basic." Features and prices remain the same for those products. And keep your eyes open for the new products."

Now, what the heck is this stuff about 1600 wide and 750? Where are you supposed to see all that and change it to the correct size? I just upload my stuff as JPEG's and leave it at that. I take it that I could be messing up?

(delayed) *GROUP HUG* YOU ARE "SPECIAL"....just like everyone else. ;-)
Christie....some time back, BP reduced the maximum pixel size for an uploaded image (such as a pano shot) whereby the photo would NOT be automatically "resized" by BP for display on the site. After a lot of experimentation, I found that if I crop a photo to a maximum long-side length of 720 pixels(I usually go 480 for the short side)...then the image on my hard drive looks the same as when it is displayed on the BP site.
That's why I thought it was odd (like Colleen said, probably a typo) that BP suggests "no smaller than 1600 pixels" on their "single image upload" page; at 1600 pixels, the resolution of the displayed image would look very different after they resized it.

I always crop to 750 on the long side...I think I'll try the 720 though. Mine always look more clear on my computer...some more than others, so it's worth a try! See...many good things to learn on this thread! Do you guys do the 72 pixels per inch as they suggest? I always go with the 300.

I have been a BP member since July, 2005. I have never taken a class (just not interested). Two things attracted me to this site. First, the free contest. Second, the "family friendly" nature of the site (no blatant nudity/vulgarity); meaning I wouldn't be embarrassed to have my children or grandchildren surf this site. If either of those things changed, I would no longer be a member. Simple as that.

Now, is it possible to change the free contest without losing people like me? Sure. For example, they could limit the amount of entries; say one per month per member for each of the categories of the contest. I wouldn't have a problem with that.

I do feel that with the introduction of the cash contest, and the increase in entries into the free contest, the quality of the judging has gone down over the past six months. I am sorry if that statement offends anyone reading this (and it probably guarantees I will never get another finalist, let alone a winner), but something needs to be done to bring the quality of the judging back up. If that means limiting the amount of entries by each of the members, so the judges can take more quality time reviewing significantly less entries, then I can accept that.

Just my two cents!

I've been reading under the HELP menu in "Uploading Photos" the different ways to upload your photos. There is Single Image Uploader or Multi Image Uploader instructions.

I've also been experimenting with the different upload options. 500 x 750 pixels or 480 x 640 or 720 on the long side. If you use 720 pixels on the long side your images will appear as large as possible on the BP site.

I've uploaded two photos to my site....one at 640 on the long side and one at 720 and you will see how much bigger 720 will appear when you click on the thumbnail to open to the large image.

I've never liked 500 X 750 pixels as it distorts some images.

Hope this makes sense to ya all. If not, you can read all about it in "Uploading Photos."

Hmmm...I think I've been doing it wrong all along. For some reason I was sizing them all down to 480 on the short side. Think I'll switch to the 720 on the long.
Could someone take a peek in my gallery (which is now basic) at the two hydrangea pictures I posted tonight and tell me which you like better. I would appreciate it!

"For some reason I was sizing them all down to 480 on the short side."

Stephanie, you were doing it correctly--for the way BP used to size the photos. But they changed it to go by the long side, and recommended 720 pixels. Hope this doesn't make things more confusing, but I wanted to let you know you weren't going crazy. LOL ;)

Fantastic thread here! So much information. This is going to be a great one! Just checking in... I did not receive the survey either. (No website, never took their classes). I did write in when I noticed the cash contest might be gone... and in response they sent me the letter meant for those with with credits to the contest. Which I didn't have, but it answered the question. Namely, that the cash contest would be "postponed" and put on hold. Which I take to mean canceled but of course, I could be wrong. My feeling was, they may have gotten overwhelmed -- too many contests, too many photos to judge! So maybe now, the judging will go back to the level where it used to be. I think we all realize, it's changed a lot. Whether we will ever solve the Mystery of the EFP's -- ! Wow. That will be a real challenge. I have always wondered why, if a photo's great on Tuesday, it is not so great on Thursday! In other words, it wins an emblem one month, then when re-submitted, Zero. Or the reverse. Yet this often happens... same with finalists. Evidently, seems like different people do the picking and the judging. And of course their tastes are not the same. On the other hand, I think there should be some definite criteria and standards to the process but too often, that doesn't seem to be the case. I also suspect, the response to the cash contest wasn't quite what they had hoped. Toward the middle of the month, I checked for the heck of it -- there were 3,155 pages of entries in the free contest and exactly 17 for the cash! At that rate, a quick calculation shows they could barely afford to award the 2 big prizes, $1000 and $500 respectively. Maybe they pulled it prematurely - not sure - as it's possible as time went on, more people may have gotten interested. Either way, I hope they don't decide to change the free one! They do make money from our galleries (Basic, formerly Premium) as well as from the classes, which are usually filled and very popular. If they do change the contest ... well, I'll reserve my judgment until I see what's up! Usually "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" would apply. As Ronald said, Just my Two cents.

Greetings friends! Dang I missed a day or two and a lot apparently!! The EFPs must still be slow as there were many more posts to this thread than that one. Bummer!

I agree with you guys tho that the Watch thread should be just that. That way you don't see all those posts, get excited, only to find out they are not being awarded.

oooooo Jessica, I love your idea on the "how did this one get an EFP thread!" LOL On second thought there are some in my gallery that I'm sure fit that criteria!

Elida good luck with your cash contest entry! I'm gonna have to poke about to see what announcements I might have missed. I didn't get a survey tho. I've never taken a class only because I'm not sure the cost would equal the gain from an "online" course. I have paid for my premium gallery, which I agree is a bargain at $22/year, up till my 2nd place win so it is now extended for one year :)

I have thought for some time that perhaps the problem with being overwhelmed could be best solved by limiting entries. To do it this way would not overburden the folks who can't afford to pay to enter or pay to have a website or take courses. And there are also those folks who are beginners or who just don't have the confidence to pay to enter against the pros that are entering. That's where I stood in terms of the cash contest. I think I'd be a kook to enter that with just my beginner/intermediate skills. After all, some of us are saving all our pennies for upgrades and new junk....cmon! lol

And I'm keepin my two cents, thank you ;)

Hi all. Last night I joined the wrong forum and was told this was the one I wanted after posting "no EP pick for me tonight so it's off to bed" So here I am.

Love your idea Jessica for "why the hell did that get the EP pick" Didn't know you were as funny as you are talented. But I'd also like to add one that asks "why the hell DIDN'T it get the EP pick" because that what I need to learn to help make my pictures better.

Hi Ann....for what it's worth, I will email you--outside of this thread--with some of my personal observations and experiences concerning the monthly contests, and about the particular photos you mentioned. In general, we all feel a personal, emotional attachment to certain images because of how we felt at the time when we took the shot; so, whenever "we" look at those images, that same emotional experience is often triggered inside of us again. It's like looking at older photos of your children....and "emotionally" remembering all the joyful experiences you had with them--no matter how technically perfect or visually-appealing the photos are; "strangers" that look at those same photos will never "see" them the same way you do. And sometimes, the reverse is true; some people will experience an emotional response from looking at one of your photos that YOU feel very little emotional attachment to.

  RE: 72 vs 300 ppi....

Makes no difference... web browsers display at the pixel density of the monitor resolution (which may or may not happen to be ~72ppi.)

Even most printers will ignore this setting. If you send an image to your printer and tell it to print 4x6 in it's best photo quality, it will usually do so at whatever the highest resolution it supports.

The important thing is to size images at NO LARGER THAN 720 pixels in either direction, or BP will resize the image and the result will be less sharp than the original (some people have reported color shifts also.)

Also, I always attach an ICC Profile to the image (sRGB), however, I'm not sure if that has any effect. Anyone know?

David, are you sure on this? My beginner's photoshop teacher told me for the web to make my photos 72 or 88 for screen res. So, I make mine smaller (300 to 72) and then have to do bicubic sharper. If I don't have to do this step it would be wonderful. What do other's think about this?

  Sharon,

If you unclick "Scale Styles" & change resolution and/or document size, you will note the actual image size is not changed. These are simply suggestions for printing (Exif metadata).

The key change is pixel dimension. You can force a pixel dimension change if Scale Styles is checked & you change the document size settings, but that is not recomended for sizing for the web, where you want precise pixel dimensions.

Also, btw, I've stopped using Bicubic Sharpener... I'm using either Bicubic or Bicubic Smoother (if I've done any sharpening already on the image) and then follow-up with precise sharpening via Unsharp mask... it gives far better quality control over the final image.

I only notice when "I" am not getting as many. ;-) I was doing pretty well up until the June 13 picks....then nothing more(I guess they are on the entries for the 16th now?)   I try to remember that not every judge is going to like every image no matter how much we might like them. They can't pick them all and obviously when we enter an image we're all hoping for at least an EP. I often go back and I don't even like some of my own images all that much.... I mean it's hard to enter every day or almost every day and really love each image..for me anyway!

  Ann,

Don't let it hurt you when you don't get the badge...just keep on plugging along with the rest of us. This really reminds me so much of dog shows. One day the judge loves a dog so much he gives it a big win, and the next day the same dog (different judge) gets dumped.

Happy Monday everyone :) The tiki party was really "awesome" and was the best time with friends I've had in a long time!! Amy, I live in Maryland..lol..not your first thought when you think of tiki bars! However, tiki is a state of mind :) Shoot, I'd advocate putting on some luau music, make a tiki-tini and dance around your house if you want :) (grass skirt optional!)

All my pics are really just the snapshot variety so I doubt I have any that are contest worthy. I will try and post a few in my gallery and if anyone wants ideas for their own tiki, just send me an email.

Sorry to go OT - just thought I'd pop in say hi and catch up on the discussion. I'll go ahead and start a July discussion thread tomorrow :)

I wouldn't be surprised if a number of changes were in the works. They've suspended the cash contest, they're changing the names of galleries, they sent out opinion surveys ... so I think there may be other things to come.

Although I love being able to enter the contest every day, I rarely have enough good photos that I do enter every day--in fact, that's only happened once in the 19 months that I've been participating regularly. If they limited our entries to 15 a month, I don't think it would be a big hardship for us, and it would really cut their workload down.

Colleen - Limiting the pictures would be a better way to change things then to leave it only open to graduates of their classes. I know there are a lot of people that feel this is what is coming down the road and they are talking about leaving the site. I really hope that doesn't happen as I cherish the friendships I'm made. And I hate it if people left BP.

Susan - really OT but I'd love your recipe for the tiki-tini. Haven't met a martini I haven't liked yet and that just sounds yummy. VBG

Sandy - that's one of the reasons why I won't get involved with dog shows. I know my dog is PERFECT and I wouldn't want some judge coming along saying he wasn't. The same way when I know I've taken a good picture and it doesn't get the badge it makes me wonder if I know a good capture when I see one.

Ann...LOL..all dogs are perfect! I'm no longer involved in dog shows either for a variety of reasons. I did finish my Michael to his championship, and that was it. He is on my page, is now five years old, and happily neutered.

I think many good images don't get the badge, and some get the badge that aren't so good. Judges are just not perfect, and I think they do the best they can. Also photography is an art form and we all have different tastes...and that's a good thing too!

Not exactly EP related but it is June contest stuff. Anyone know when they are going to announce the Cash Winners? Seems to me we are running out of time :)

Does anyone else have problems seeing the little favorites flag on their pics? I lost the ability to see mine when I upgraded to what used to be premium. My daughter has some of them in her account as favorites, but we can't see the banner over the pic. Sorry to get OT.

Stephanie login into your Member Center.

Then click Favorites and from that page click View Gallery.

Your photo thumbnails will come up smaller and if you click each one you'll see the favorite banner about it if it was picked as a fav.

Thanks Susan I didn't know that. I saw the list and there was almost 2700 pages. Wouldn't find myself that way. I'm not on the top as you are. But then again I have a QUITE A FEW of yours in my favorite photos folders and none of my own. LOL

Members with a free gallery will not be able to participate in the contest, but daily entries will be allowed.

Wow! Well, BP is a business, after all and they do have to pay the judges - so why not allow only the paying customers to enter their contest? Of course, they have left all the club contests open to everyone, so that's a good thing.

Considering the number of monthly entries, the number of people complaining month after month about good photos getting passed up on an EFP 1 month (or 2, or 3....), only for it to get 1 on the next submission, I'd say this is a pretty good solution.

This seems more than fair...the Basic gallery cost is just $20.00 a year (and less after the first year) which is very reasonable. Where else could you have such a nice gallery, enter a daily contest, and have the discussions for less than that? It might also urge more people to go ahead and pay for a basic gallery which will also be better for BetterPhoto. I think it's a win/win. :-)

I had no idea how many free galleries there were though I think many of those owners may not participate in the contest. Just did a count and there are over twice as many free as "basic" galleries; that surprised me. I, too, think this seems like a good approach--I hope it has enough of an impact to make a difference to BP.

Someone also pointed out to me that there will no longer be any 2nd place prizes (previously a year's subscription to or renewal of the basic gallery). This seems like an appropriate move to me, too, but I hope they don't do away with the nine 2nd places just because there are no prizes.

Personally I think they came up with a great solution. I agree with Sandy, for $22 a year (that's 6 cents a day) you get a beautiful Gallery where friends and family can veiw your work, a chance to compete with outstanding artists, and a community of wonderful people who are all willing to share and teach and help you learn. In this day and age of outradgeous prices I think it's a heck of a deal!!!! Tammy I'm so sorry you feel that way and I know anyone else that does will be very much missed. I hope you'll reconsider and stay on this wonderful site. They are not doing this to drive people away. They are just trying to keep everyone happy and of course stay in business.

Ann, I agree with you 100%. $22. a year is a bargain for this wonderful site full of great people and incredible talent. I just bought my basic gallery about two weeks ago, before they made the change and I'm very pleased. I'm staying right here and have very little interest in looking into other sites. BP is more than I can keep up with now. I hope their change improves their work load and the chances for good images to be recognized and not overlooked. I have not had an EP in a few weeks and I'm very sad about that, but happy for all of those who are still getting them even under the harsh conditions. Congrats to you all! And thanks to BP for trying to improve for the higher good of us all.

I think the change is fair, too. I'm sure plenty of people will complain and others will leave the site, but if you look at other good contests, many of them require you to pay $5 an image. If you enter a photo in a juried show, you have to pay--I doubt those who win feel they've "paid" for their wins, or acceptance to the show. $22/year is really a small price to pay for a contest of BP's stature, imo.

Also, I think a number of people just got a free gallery in order to enter the contest--they didn't really participate on the site (forums, comments, etc.), so not only did they not bring $ to BP, they didn't bring anything else.

I'm sure for some people the 2nd place prize of a free gallery was the reason for entering the contest. There may be some members that just can't afford the "Basic" gallery. 22 dollars may not seem like much to most members but for others it could mean the world.

So in a way I do feel bad for them. The way it is set up now if you ever had a Deluxe gallery , taken a photo course and/or had a Premium gallery you can now just have a free gallery and still enter the contest.

I can see that things will change again if that happens.

I wish there could be another way to handle the situation without closing the door for free members.

Some interesting and far-reaching changes at BP! On the new Contest Info page, there is no mention, whatsoever, of 2nd Place winners; only 1 Grand Prize Winner, and 10 (category) 1st Place winners. I imagine the number of contest entries will dramatically drop, starting today; the main contest page says "over 36,000 entries a month", but I think that will fall WAY DOWN....unless a bunch of people buy a Basic gallery. I guess one can still get a Free gallery displaying 30 photos at a time, when they join the site, but they cannot enter the monthlies. Should be an interesting month to see what happens to the number of contest entries, if they will even have EFPs any more, and if the number of new members drops off dramatically.... Good Luck everyone!

  "Colleen ... DUCK :-)"

LOL Tressie! The people I'm talking about aren't even reading this thread. I'm not talking about folks like Tammy, who will be missed, but others who don't participate at all, maybe have one photo in their gallery, etc.

Mickey, I joined BP with a free gallery, and hoped for a long time to win 2nd place in order to get a premium gallery. I'm on a fixed income, so $22 is not small change to me. But eventually, I found that I wanted to display more than 30 photos, I was on the site all the time, and I was serious enough about my photography that the money seemed like a good investment. So I bought the premium gallery.

I do wish they could have gone with a 15/mo limit on entries instead. But this solution is still better than a lot of others.

Cary , Below is the totals since last October that Alexander is always kind enought to post each month. I found it to be very surprising that fewer photos seem to be entered as the weather gets nicer.

I have no way of knowing the ratio of photos entered between Free and paying members but I can see that next month could be a lot lower.

At almost 11,000 ( 25 % ) photos less then their high of October it seems that the contest for what ever reason isnt as popular as it once was. I can only see one of 2 things happening, either the people with free galleries are going to pony up and pay for the right to enter the contest or they will walk.

Either way the totals for next month will be very telling.

Comparison:
October 2007: 40033
November 2007: 35935
December 2007: 33187
January 2008: 36412
February 2008: 31563
March 2008: 33458
April 2008: 31568
May 2008: 31160
June 2008: 29506

Colleen I know you spend a lot of time here and that you take your photography serious . Your efforts show that . But because one doesn't spend a lot of time involved with the groups or forums doesn't make them any less serious then one who does.

I know that there are many artist here that spend alot of time involved with other photo sites. Many have rent or brought their own server space to display their work.

Myself , between work , photography and editing I don't have the time to spend on Betterphoto to the level of envolvement that other people do. I'm also a member of 4 other sites, ( All by the way more expensive then BP but not necessary better. )

Site involvement should not be a judge of dedication . My comments had nothing to do with any of your post . I do wish you the Best of Light !!!

  Happy Canada Day, eh !!!!!

Here's my two cents worth....

I think sometimes people just use the free gallery to advertise for their more expensive gallery elsewhere. I've seen it done in a few cases. Cost free advertising...now that's not fair!

I'm on a limited income but I thought it's only $22 a month and all I'd have to give up is one coffee or soft drink a month and it's paid for.

I feel the benefits of the Basic/Premium gallery out weighed staying with the free gallery and now with the changes I'm very happy I did.

I hope others decide to stay and pay the $2 a month for the Basic/Premium gallery. I think it's a small price to pay for entering the free contest.

Others have already mentioned the many perks of staying with BP... my big one is ....FRIENDSHIPS !!! Can't put a dollar value on that one.

Hope those thinking of leaving reconsider and stay. Some of you will be greatly missed.

I cherish the friendships I have made here, I will still visit their galleries, but as before there are too many free galleries and I won't pay even $22 for a free Ep badge. If anyone goes to JPG.com add me as a contact. It is still free and if you win you get published and $100. :) Have a happy 4th all !

Again, I think the changes are fair and reasonable and feel we owe BP a "Thank You" for trying to help with the complaints they were getting from people on their site.
BUT what I'd really like to know is will there still be second place winners? Don't really care about a prize. (Let be totally honest. Is the prize what is/was your motivator?) Just the golden egg under the pictures means A LOT lot to me!!! Maybe second place will become an "Honorable Mention" as was in the cash contest. I CERTAINLY HOPE SO!!!

There seems to be differing opinions on the question of there being any 2nd Place Winners from now on....because there was nothing mentioned one way or the other in Jim's posting. And, the new Contest main page only mentions "prizes" for the "1" Grand Prize Winner and the "10" Category 1st Place winners every month. The contest FAQ page looks new, too (or at least since last I looked at it a month ago)....but no mention of 2nd Place Winners. Hopefully, out of all the thousands of entries every month, they will still "award" more than just 11 photos. I think 2nd Place awards (even without prizes) would help keep more new people inspired, and keep them "entering" them contest (i.e buying gallery space and/or taking classes). Happy Canada Day, eh! and Happy Fourth of July this weekend!

My two cents worth - again (LOL). I was very reluctant to purchase a Premium gallery and didn't do so for several months. I'm just learning photography and didn't think the price would be worth it based upon my skill level - or lack thereof. I was also concerned because so many other free sites I came across "shared" your information with any marketing company that came along with a few bucks to throw their way - I've got enough spam thank you very much. I have been pleasantly surprised by not only the way BP has held my info private, but at the vast array of information/help that is available here at this one site. I feel badly for those who choose to leave, or cannot afford a gallery as I will miss sharing/learning from their photography skills, their humor, their insights and their help. BP is a business, and the level that this site has escalated to has necessitated some changes, hard as those may be. I think this is a great site, made up of great people, and I think the money I spent on this gallery has been more than worth the expense in the rewards I have been reaping from it from a learning perspective. I hope those who are considering leaving, will reconsider their decision when their anger subsides. I think we all will miss you.

Based on what I have read on the BP website pages dealing with the contest changes....the only thing that is clear (at least to me) is that:

1) only people taking (or who have taken) classes thru BP (a new added value)...and members with a Basic, Deluxe, or Pro Gallery (and anyone who has ever HAD a Deluxe or Pro gallery) can enter the monthly contest, now.

2) a prize will be awarded each month to the Grand Prize Winner (a Deluxe Gallery), and to the 10 First Place Winners (sling packs)--in each category.

3) NO mention was made about (any) 2nd Place Winners. (perhaps, because they will no longer get a "prize"--or perhaps, because there won't BE any 2nd Place winners anymore)

4) Finalists never received a "prize" ( unless they actually "placed"), so BP may still "award" Final Round images with a gallery badge....and an email notification.

I feel bad for all the free gallery people, I think it would have been nice on BP's part to give MORE of a fore warning on what was coming up for July.
I would have been VERY upset to wake up and want to enter a photo and to find out I couldn't.
Not a good way to keep people either, just my 2 cents worth LOL!

The email says, "You will be automatically upgraded to the new Basic BetterPholio, for the remainder of your current subscription."

So this means, as far as I understand it, that if you already have a premium ("basic") gallery, you will get the new version now, and until your subscription expires, at no extra charge. You can see when your subscription expires by looking in your member center.

I was able to look at the new version of my gallery, but now I can't. I'm guessing that everybody is trying to do things to their galleries at once and maybe it's jamming up the system somehow.

Peaches, you are in a similar boat as me (not the husband part). I "assume" that is doesn't matter whether anyone won their "Basic"(Premium) Gallery, or paid the $22 for it; we can renew it before it expires, at $39/yr. I am looking forward to using the different photo albums on the new gallery.....as soon as the bugs are gone.

This seems like alot of changes all at once.. No warning...

"Changes without any warning" is the "BP way." ;-) I remember when they changed the maximum pixel dimension (without automatic resizing and resolution loss)to 720; I had already finished and "optimized" a ton of pano-dimension (under 1200 pixels or less) shots, ahead of time, and had to re-crop and rework them. I understood their need to do that....I just wished they had given some advance warning.

Kara, THAT is my "interpretation" of the new Basic Gallery rate information: $49 for the first year, for a NEW ONE....and $39 for renewals, (before they have expired). Since there is a "version" option on the Basic BetterPholio Admin page, I "assume" one will be able to keep the same "look" as before, by choosing the "Classic Version" option. From hearing about the glitches people are experiencing, I have been reluctant to check out the new version....just yet-- so I don't really know what it looks like.

Teresa, go to your Member Center. Then hit the far-right tab that says "BasicBetterPholio" and it will show you the options for configuring it. Click on New Version (instead of Classic Version) and Update. Then you should see your gallery in the new format.

I'm a little nervous about trying the new version until things get settled. I'm sure the good news will show up here. Also, my tears have turned to sobs!! No EFP's for me since June 4. Boo Hoo! Hey, maybe I'm just lost and they will find me again today!

Karen stop Boo-Hooing. I just checked out your Gallery and there is NO WAY your not going to get the badge for that Heron. It's incredible.

Ann, how sweet you are to try to make me feel better. But if they didn't like my Bushkill Falls then I'm not sure they will like anything! I like the variety in your gallery. I won't be holding my breath for EFP's or I could be dead shortly, but I will keep hoping.

Colleen you had me post on the wrong thread. LOL

Karen trust me. If it doesn't get the badge I'll scream "recount" right along with you.

(that's right, Ann....blame Colleen!) ;-) I figure, if they can chit-chat on the EFP Watch thread....then people can post their EPs on this one. ;-) Have a great 4th of July weekend, everyone!

"Colleen, this is not the EP thread its the discussion about EP's!"

Oh, sorry! lol There are 3 threads discussing BP changes, two of them are supposed to be about EFPs but different aspects of EFPS, and I had a different tab open for all three!!

That'll teach me to try to do more than one thing before the coffee kicks in! ;)

Hey Colleen, I'm missing one thread! I'm only tagging two so far, this one and Cheri's. What is the third one? I've had my coffee, I can handle it.

Karen, I have a kitten sleeping on my keyboard now so hopefully there won't be typos. ;)

The 3rd thread was started by Jim, and is titled "Changes Have Been Made to the Contest." Here's the URL:

aaaagggghhhh! I have missed so much!!! I'm late, I'm late.....LOL I really need to jet this other issue in my life so I can get back to the fun (and more important) stuff!!

Anyway, thanks to all for your posts and I feel I'm a bit more updated on the new contest changes.

Here is the new thread for July discussion on EFPs.
