Thinking of Buying a Fuji S2 Pro

I am a film user who would like to switch to digital. I have heard alot about the Fuji S2pro and was wondering if you folks had any pros or cons. I am thinking of using it for some portrait stuff and photojournalistic stuff. I may be doing some traveling to other countries and need something that will be dependable. If I switch to a faster iso (100-800)is that going to bring more noise to my picture like it would on a film camera. Also are there any tips for someone making the switch to digital? Thanks

Ps does anyone know if the autofocus is fast?

I had the same decision to make and although the Fuji is a great camera (I had the Fuji S602 before this) I ended up with the Canon 10D. It is faster, has less noise (usable ISO to 3200), had the Canon line of lenses behind it (also the 3rd party ones like Sigma, Tamron, Tokina) It is really an amazing camera all for $1499 or less (no lens).
You can see some reviews on it here:
http://www.betterphoto.com/reviews/reviewItemDetail.php?reviewItemID=1500
or here:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos10d/
You can also read the review there (under REVIEWS section) of the Fuji to compare and if you do a search on the net you will find many more reviews and comparisons.

DPReview has pics to show noise but here is a link to my site where you can see some samples (albeit boring ones) at various speed just to see the noise levels.

You can also look around my gallery and see some of the pics from the 10D.

Here is another site review on the 10D from a Nikon group none-the-less:
http://www.nikondigital.org/reviews/10D/canon_10d_review.htm

I will take a quote from the last summary page;
"I have no concerns in stating that as things stand (at the time of writing this review) the EOS-10D is the absolute best in class, with the best image quality, lowest high sensitivity noise, superb build quality and excellent price (not to mention the huge choice of lenses)."

You will probably be happy with any camera you choose and no camera is perfect but this one is starting to get awfully close.

I have owned the S2 for over a year and love it. My decision to go Fuji was because it is based on the Nikon family of bodies and I already had a ton of Nikon compatible lenses. I have no problems with it and use it for Weddings, Senior portraits, etc. (No action sports yet) The auto focus is slower than My N9os but I don't care. Buy the Fuji from a dealer that will give you support as there isn't really a Fuji support line like Nikon has. I suggest Tallyns or The Stock House in Mpls. The Fuji comes with Adobe Elements that is really easy to use and has a great help and How to section. Because it does about 85% of Adobe Photoshop 7 you'll find eventually switching to 7 will be easy.

Good Luck!

If you own Nikon lenses now get the Fuji, If you have Canon now get the 10d. If this is not a factor, nothing focuses faster than Canon particulary with ultrasonic lenses.
bottom line its very Personal. Try both and choose what you like. I like Canon, My ex-partner uses Nikon.

Hi Lee, if you have Nikon lenses than S2pro is easy choice, other than that it is most expensive from 6MP DSLR's but it is great camera. fits in a hand like a glove, and extremely user friendly.
Slightly more noisy on hi ISO but has slightly better resolution than Nikon or Canon, and has some futures that other's don't. If you can, try it how it feels in your hand. All three cameras are top notch image quality with RAW and Adobe RGB options but only S2 has unique interpolation in camera to get 11MP image. And extensive software pack. And 1394 connection.
Artur.

thank you very much, all of you. I did try out the fuji and it did fit like a glove. One other ? could you folks name me off a couple of good stores to buy from other than adorama and b and h, they seem deependable, but I have seen cheaper prices with all of the accesories on other sites. also I don't want to go to ritz/wolf camera because they charge almost double of what I can get online. thanks

Lee, Don't buy the digital from New York. They are salemen and there is no support. Fuji does not have a 1-800 help line and you will need an experienced dealer to answer your questions. I suggest the Stock House from Mpls and ask for Kevin.

Otherwise purchase from Tallyns

I have used the S2 for almost 2 years. Love the images, hate the handling. I am currently considering a move to the 10D, since Canon's approach has resulted in a real "system" as opposed to a unique hybrid. Where I am unsure is the image quality and ability to enlarge and manipulate. In particular, I don't claim to understand the technology, but the S2 in highest quality JPEG produces an image size of 4256 x 2848 and an approx. 4.3 MB file size. The highest quality for the 10D is considerably smaller at 3072 x 2048 with a file size of about 2.4 MB. It would seem to me that this additional size and available data from the S2 would equate to larger and more dense enlargements or the ability to crop tighter while maintaining image quality. I have not found even one review that addresses this issue!? Anyone care to educate me?

  Hi Jeff,
You well not gain any thing by going to 10D, Fuji is a king of resolution in 6MP sensors due to unique sensor design and interpolation algorithm that is creating that hi resolution setting. If you wont more you have to go to Canon 1DS or Kodak 14N but I heard Fuji is preparing new S3 intro at PMA.

Agreed, Fuji has better resolution than any other 6MP camera out there and has better hi ISO capabilities. The 10D is known for backfocus issues, and you can save your money and buy the Digital Rebel which is a crippled 10D. Fuji is known for its great auto white balance and color. It also uses Nikon glass that is better than Canon at the wide end. Canon has better telephotos with IS and have a better selection of T/S (though you can get by using software...)
Fuji can give you a 12MP image straight out the camera without using any desktop software. In fact, at the higher ISOs, the S2 out resolves the 1Ds!
