Digital Photo Printers

I am in the market for a printer for my digital camera. I would like to get the best quality, but am confused as to what denotes a "good quality" printer. Specifically, what do the resolution numbering mean? (i.e. 1400x1400, 1400x720...) Which would be the best?

The higher the number the clearer the print. I recommend Epson, not because I'm a name brand snob. I like their color match, and the instant dry inks. My old Lexmark could take days for the black ink to dry if it ever did. I print pretty much every picture at 1400dpi. I don't think you want to go under that if your going bigger then 5x7. What sizes do you want to print, and what is your budget. The Epson 1280 goes for somewhere around $400 now and prints up to 13x44. I love mine.

For around $1000 consider the Kodak 8500 printer. It uses no ink but instead a sublimation process which burns 3 passing colored films over the print. The last film is an overcoat. (like a clear coat on a car) The prints are extemely durable. (It's very hard to tear one in half and the overcoat will protect it from the elimates of water and finger prints) The film comes in either glossy or matt. The paper is a heavy stock and comes on packages of 50. The estimated cost of film and paper are about $1.75 per sheet. The printer comes with Photoshop Elements 2. (It offers printing packages and the ability to different images on the same sheet) Keep in mind that this is a photo printer only and not a document ptinter. I have had mind for 6 months and it's great!

Hi Micheal, I had an Epson photo printer for years and did love the quality of the prints but.... The print heads were forever getting clogged and the print head needed to be replaced. This had to be done professionally and was too expensive to justify.
I used soooo much ink cleaning the heads over and over that I decided to inquire about a different brand.
I ended up buying a Canon S900 and am very pleased with it so far. The print head can be purchased and replaced by me if that should occur. The print quality is just as good as my Epson and it prints a 4x6 photo in about 50 seconds... My epson took 4 or 5 minutes.:) Good Luck!
