Does anyone know what is the process the judges use now for the contests? I used to get quite a few editor's picks but now maybe have gotten 5 in the last several months. I no longer enter one a day but don't think I have became a worst photographer than I was before and was wondering what is the judges' process now. Also, they've only gone thru Nov 12th, and Dec 1st. So, if you uploaded contest photos after Nov 12th, they're still in the running for an EP. That's one of the recent changes contest changes they've made; they pick EPs slower now, and often go thru many days all at once.

I agree with Usman. I like the change as far as EPs not being given out as freely. It seemed in the past anything and everything got an EPs. This way it makes it more of a challenge for me.

The bar should never have been lowered, if it was. With such a drastic change, it makes me wonder if my images they chose were actually any good or were they just handing these things out to anyone. I don't know if there are new judges or why such a big change. I remember when I first joined BetterPhoto it was same group of people who received the EPs etc. That's not saying that it wasn't deserved or earned, but then it opened up and you saw different photographers with different styles that could be appreciated and learned from. I thought BP became a much more encouraging and welcoming place in the last few years than it had been when I first joined. I remember receiving "critiques" telling me I should throw my camera away, but I was just beginning and I don't live in an area where I can just walk out the door and point and shoot so I learned to take those with a grain of salt. What I miss most about the EPs is not the little ribbon but the feedback I received not only from the judges but also other BP photographers who saw my image in the contest link. ~April

Hi Natural Abstract, I happen to KNOW that you are an excellent photographer. I have had a lot of fun with the contest and I have noticed that just entering does not guarantee an EP. It annoys me to some extent as well. One member has been kind enough to give me real constructive advice and he was right. I think you do an excellent job with the subject matter you have available. I can only speak for me but I have grown as a photographer, have gotten some great ideas at BP, but would like some honest advice on how to improve. I would also like to know how some photos are done. I have inquired and some people respond but most do not share. That would be nice. Ken Smith and a couple of others have been very, very helpful to me. Debra Harter was wonderful but I don't think she is doing BP any more. If I was going to give you advice, I would say, don't give up. You are too good to quit. Besides, what have you got to lose? Well, maybe confidence.... I struggled with that but maybe we need to do photography for OURSELVES and what WE like.

Thanks Harriet, I agree with you - the contests are fun and entering doesn't guarantee anything. My main concern is BP not going back to the way it was when it was very clique-y - I should tell you sometime my story about my first acceptance to the High & Dry, oh one lady here did not like at all and neither did all her friends and she had a lot of friends, and I became just a running joke in all their comments on their own images. That was one time I thought about quitting. They had convinced me that image was so bad I was too embarrassed to even go to the H&D reception that year. But that was 2006. In the last few years tho it seemed people were more welcoming and gave constructive feedback whether they liked the subject matter or not. I can get a website anywhere, the community of fellow photographers is another story ~April

I hate hearing that, April. I know it sometimes seems pretty much ruled by cliques, but I don't think it's always their intent to be like that, although it seems you must have run up against a particularly mean bunch. Some people tend to stick with their own group based on nothing more than what time of day they post. I'm sure there are a lot of people like me who just can't do a lot of typing. (bad hands)..I sure did notice a lot of difference when I couldn't do much commenting anymore. If I get 3 or 4 a day it's unusual. I hope your experience this time will be much better.

Because of you, April, I am now doing BP. I am sorry about your experience with H&D. I have not figured this one out, yet. Civility is a lost art for some people. I have not experienced this at BP but I have only been in it for about three years at the most. If it was as you described, then I would not want it to go back to that. What some people do not realize is that one's art (and photography is art) is a reflection of themselves. The artist bares his soul, so to speak, and cruelty is very hurtful. The "do unto others" is only FOR others to abide by for some people. Hang in there. We need to go on a road trip together sometime.

Harriet, I'm so glad you enjoy BP. Had those people been representative of the majority of people here I never would recommend it to anyone but they are not, they are just the loudest. The funny thing about that first H&D was Jane always tells me that was one of her all-time favorites, which I've always thought was strange because at that time I was just a little museum student who didn't know anything and entered it on a dare. We should go on a road trip sometime. I take my ESL test this Thursday and I can finally breathe again and think of stuff other than languages. ~April

I don't comment on photo's like I used to. I don't have as much time as before but when I first joined BP I found it to be a very welcoming, encouraging, helpful place to be. That's why I have stayed. I must say though, I am in a rut when it comes to photography. I have felt uninspired for a while now. I hope that goes away soon.

Without sounding like Scrooge at Christmas time, I am frustrated because I don't see how all the photos can be judged with less than 10 days left in this month. As far as I can tell, the only EP's are on 12-1-13. As for November, I can't tell how far along they are here either. I guess after Christmas they will pull a judge-a-thon and finish up November and spend all of January doing December. I am not complaining about not getting EP's because I don't KNOW if my photos made it or not. It is like taking a test and never knowing if you passed or failed. Maybe they are in file 13.

I agree, Harriet, that is what's so frustrating - not knowing if they are even looking. I got one for November, and that wasn't my longhorns from Johnson City which is a pretty straightforward photograph and I thought if I had a chance that would have been it. I know some people complained that too many EPs were being given, but it's seems like they have now swung to the opposite end of the pendulum. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to their process. ~April

The only issue I see with the "pushing ourselves more" to be worthy of receiving nods from Judges, is that I have no idea now WHY I do or do not get an EP. I do know that my skills are always growing, or so I believe - but who knows! So, what exactly is it that I need to improve? Is it my camera work or my post-production skill that needs work? Thank Heaven that I still love photography - despite a lack of encouragement from BP. I'm pretty fond of my fellow members, too.

Garret, I doubt you'll hear from BP staff, if you're looking for an explanation. You mentioned EPs for the 31st. I haven't seen any for that date…just the first of Dec, and the 1-2 of Jan. As for an explanation…and it's only a speculation. BP uses different people for each month. The December team (or person) is really, really behind, whereas the January team has already started. But we've seen this often lately…they start the new month, but just for a day or two, then return to the preceding month. Again, it would be nice for BP to chime in on their EP process. For me personally, I'd love to see a consistent EP rate (maybe 50%) and awarding them NLT than one week after contest date. They kinda used to do this a couple of years ago, but increasingly it's been a mad dash to the contest finish line.

I did not get any EPs at all for December, and they skippped me altogether the last 1/2 of November. I, also had problems trying to enter the last part of December, so I didn't enter my photo on the 31st. I am going to slow way down-not entering everyday anymore, and do some of the photo projects I have been putting off for too long. BP just doesn't seem to care anymore.

Have fun with your projects, but toss in a photo every now and then, to the contest. BP is much more than just the management, it's the people that comprise the community. And I'm sure they care.

Since they are so far behind, it would be less confusing if we always mentioned the month when we talk about the EPs. I'm interested in Garret's latest statement - what month and what is your source? I'm not at all doubting you - I'm just completely confused. I have nothing at all for December and only one for January and that was for the 1st. The November Winners finally came out. Are you saying you have seen EP's for images entered in the contest on December 26-31?

Garret, I did see some EPs on photos that were time stamped in late December, but it's unclear if they were uploaded on Jan 1st or 2nd. It's possible they were uploaded in December, then entered into the contest on Jan 1st or 2nd, when they handed out the Jan EPs. Hopefully someone will chime in on this forum, if they entered these photos into the contest in December.

I entered a Nov 7 upload instead of a new upload on January 1 when they were having such big server problems and no one could get in. It did not have an EP but does now. I'm willing to bet lots of others did, too, as it seemed to be the only way to get an Jan 1 entry in.

So far, I've found maybe 3 images that were uploaded on 01/01 - all within minutes of midnight. All the others for January seem to have been uploaded in December, but entered on the 1st. That's what I ended up doing. It looks as though things were fixed by the the 2nd. Here's where the "Recent EPs" gallery is located... Btw, I like that the gallery now contains only the most recent in descending order instead of skipping around willy-nilly. I'm not really happy about not seeing my images anywhere amongst them. Oh, well.

This confusion is one of the reasons that I add the monthDay (and category) at the end of my description. And, Joannie - I can't tell if December EPs are finished or not because of all the judge-jumping around. This is like sending out November statements in January, plus some January invoices, before finishing the billing for most of December. And none of it has the actual date the work done recorded on the paperwork.

As far as I can tell, comparing some of the 12/31 EPs shown in the chronological list with the current Recent list, there *have* been a few EPs awarded for late December entries. The few I looked at were by photographers without galleries, so posting in the forum may not be an option for them. Since some members do delete entries which haven't gotten EPs, it would be really helpful if BP could share its process for the first stage of contest picking, or somehow let everyone know when that stage is complete for a given month.

When people see EPs dated the last day of the month, it gives the impression that the judging for the month is finished. Is this a new trend, or an anomaly? Thanks!

Marie (Nancy) and others, Please do not despair. What those posting to this forum have been saying is that BP has NOT looked at the December entries beyond, at most, the first day or two of that month. Please do not think: "They skipped all of my December entries." That is not true for anyone at this point in time. It IS true that a few EPs have been given out for the first 1-3 days of January. But this has long been a pattern here - a new judge or editor starting a new month before his or her colleague has finished the old one. It's confusing and irritating and frustrating and maddening, but that's just the way it is. And in this case it has been said repeatedly that the December entries have NOT been looked at beyond the first day or so, but they will be in good time. Most of all, DO NOT DELETE your entries until after the Finalists for that month come out. The editors have even been known to go back and give a few EPs AFTER they have apparently been all the way through someone's entries. Hang in there and keep on entering.

In the survey that came out today I stated very clearly that I'd like to see BP disclosing regularly and openly information on their process to give EPs. I also replied to their survey and brought out some issues (including the lack of EPs for December). I used the 50-dollar discount code (it seems all people got it: at least my father did, and he did not have a gallery on BP any more) to renew my gallery for a year... and my father did it too... at least this was nice!

After getting JIm's email this morning I tried to use it for the buy one get one free also and now you cannot do it...Your Dad is lucky...Just one more confusing issue with BP I guess...I tried it and now they still want you to pay for one year and give you one for free...which is ok, but why confuse folks with even bringing up the useless coupon. I cannot afford classes even with the discount and would have gladly used the $50.00 to renew just for a year.

I often took advantage of the 2-fer, which is why my subscription is good until April 2015. An explanation email "Whoop! I goofed Kathy" arrived this morning about the $50 coupon. My budget even with that discount does not allow for the classes. And, I had missed the earlier mention about a "green drink" but the email does clarify that info. Btw, I had taken that 2-week course on "Snow Photography" from Jim Zuckerman for $99. It was terrific, but cash flow has been redirected and even that option has to be tabled for awhile. It doesn't look as though the $50 discount can be used on the short courses, anyway.

Yes, I did ask "When?" I am one of the members who was wondering if the month had been skipped, so I feel qualified in asking. I assume that BP is still encouraging people to enter the contest because it is still listed in the topics in the forum. Now, I would still like to know "WHEN?" the judging will even begin much less get caught up. I taught 40 years. If I had given a test and waited three weeks to even begin grading them and let the results be known almost a month later, I would not have kept my job. I continue to enter because to my knowledge this is the only site that has a contest and up until a few months ago, I thoroughly enjoyed the competition. If there are stipulations to be met by asking "WHEN" then I was not aware of them. Perhaps targeting a "specific" population needs to be stated rather than implied. I have had to do some encouraging lately myself but can't encourage my friends to join until BP resumes some professionalism.

I think I've been misunderstood, Harriet. I was certainly not taking you to task for asking "when?" and as a former teacher myself, I absolutely agree. I just did not want you or anyone else to assume I was in any way speaking about BP in general when I said "hang in there". My comments were intended only and specifically to say that I do NOT think the December EP selection has been completed or even close to completed and I do think they will go back and do it - somehow. So do not delete December entries. Personally, I think the inconsistency and delays are maddening and frustrating and a few other things besides. But I can't do anything about them, so I just keep playing the game and getting my pleasure from viewing others' work, from reading comments on my own work when it catches someone's eye, from the very helpful critiques in the FFFP Club, and from those Finalists that may eventually come my way if and when they do.

I still think a lot of us would be much happier if the judging schedule were more consistent. We may not like the long delays, but we do understand travels and work and other reasons (well, sort of... not in any other job on Earth, but that's another issue.) Just don't start a new month until all the Judges have completed their assignments for the current (or latest still open) Contest. And don't bounce around. I hate checking and rechecking every one of my entries every time somebody posts that they got a new EP. It's demoralizing and annoying as all get-out.

One EP each on the first day of Dec & Jan is all I have to show for now. But I am not deleting any of the non-EP images of Dec and Jan just yet. I am waiting to get the details on the BetterPhoto 2.0 from hopefully BP itself. Maybe that provide answers to our current queries, at least that's what I hope. In the mean time, I am hanging on and playing along with full vigor, still getting inspired by many of your images which I often check every now and then. UB.

Well, my best guess is that they are probably done with the January,14 EP selection for now and will move back to December,13 and between now and till 31st Jan, we’ll see the remaining EP’s for December and the subsequent badges, this is how, more or less, things turned out last month and also in the few months before(in the revised/changed scheme of things)....

They'll have to announce December Winners by the end of January, and for that, they need at least to look at 111 photos (1 Grand Winner, 10 1st places and 1000 2nd places), plus they need to look at least a couple of hundred more photos to give them Finalist badges, plus a hundred or more for Staff Favorites... Hopefully they'll start giving EPs soon, as if they hurry, then it becomes moe like a lottery (they'll overlook good photos, and it's not clear from whose photos they start from looking at: e.g. if it matters if you are taking courses, have bought a pro gallery, have been a member for 10 years or if your name starts with an A or if you upload your photos at a certain hour).

Kerry offered this explanation on Jan 6th "Hang in there, BetterPhoto friends. The judges are just getting back into action after the holidays, and only 2 pages have been judged. As they progress, we're sure you'll see a lot more photos getting EPs." It's only been 5 days since that announcement. There are not quite 2300 Recent Entries in that gallery (some of which were uploaded from years ago through this past Autumn-January. It's not clear how many were actually entered in December. The problem always seems to get back to the same point... There shouldn't be one January Entry receiving an EP until the Judges finish December. As a Marketing Tool, the Contest with the inconsistent procedures for nearly a year now, does not seem particularly effective.
