Which lenses to take to Ireland? I will be traveleing to Ireland soon. I have a Canon 60D and Canon 10-22, 17-55, and 70-200 F4 lenses. I also have a 60mm macro and a set of extension tubes. I would like to take just two lenses and I am wondering which lens, if any, I can leave home.

Part of the answer depends on your shooting style and subject preferences - ie, is this to be primarily a landscape-shooting photography trip? Or will you be focusing more on old buildings, farm animals, close- or mid-range subjects, etc., rather than wide open vistas? Or perhaps just as likely, a little of the above? Personally, I would rule out the macro lens, in your attempt to get down to just 2 lenses. (Unless say, flower or insect macros are simply your all-time favorite things to shoot, and so you intend to find lots of those subjects for that in Ireland.) The 10-22 will be especially useful if you're going into a lot of old churches/chapels (particularly if you can use a tripod there) and if you loved shooting architecture. And it can make some really interesting outdoor landscape shots, anchoring something in the foreground of a huge, wide scene, for instance. (It is perhaps my all-time favorite lenses, and I'd definitely take it if I were taking this trip, based on my shooting interests.) So then for me, it would come down to either the 17-55 or the 70-200... And whether I found myself, historically, needing a fair amount of reach in my personal trend of photo subject matter while on travel. (Also weight would factor in, if I was looking to pack light.) For me personally, when I've taken bigger zooms on my trips (200, or 300, or once, a 100-400) they ultimately always are my least-used focal lengths of the trips, which could tip me in favor of the 17-55. (Ugh! Ah, for a 24-105 to be on the list of candidate lenses!) Of course, "L" glass is lovely to use, always, and while I'd probably live more at the 70mm range if I took it, than the 200mm range, it could require rethinking some shots - to stand further away than you'd expect, to get everything you want in the scene... Very tough call, if you truly must select just 2...! But I'd say drop the 60, take the 10-22, and deliberate a little more on the choice - see what your personal trend has been on past trips, for what & how you like to shoot, and what focal lengths tend to support your preferences.

Just as Chris mentioned above, it all depends on the type of images you would like to shoot in your trip. If you intend to travel by foot a lot during your Ireland trip, holding your camera body with a tripod too, then I would say, lugging a heavy lens like (70-200) might not be best of ideas. Canon's 10-22mm on the other hand is much lighter and is considered by many to be one of the finest non-L lenses that Canon manufactures. And Ireland is full of scenic beauty, so it just makes sense to go with it. So my choices would be a 10-22 and a 17-55mm. And good luck and happy shooting, Virginia. UB.

Thank you for your responses. I left on the trip early on the 13th and decided to take all three lenses - the 10-22, 17-55, and 70-200. Since I was on a bus tour, some photo opportunities were very rushed. I found I used the 10-22 and 17-55 almost exclusively and I had very little opportunity to use the 70-200. So these two lenses will be my choice on future trips of this nature. Thanks again for your insights.

Glad it worked out - your experience matches my own, generally -- the 70-200 just wouldn't see a lot of use for me, while on travel. But I have the 24-105, offering just a bit more reach than the 17-55 -- and the 24-105 lens goes on every trip I take (along with 10-22)!

Yes, I would be happy to have a mid-range zoom lens with a little more reach. I might look at that one for the future.
