Photography Question

Advice for an 8-week composition course?

I'm currently taking Creative Close-Ups. (Hi, Kerry, if you're reading this!) The areas where I'd most like to grow as a photographer are composition (building a pleasing image) and creativity (if I go to Kerry Park in Seattle, how do I shoot something different than what's been shot before?).

I can probably afford one more 8-week class.

Several classes, which start April 8th, look interesting. Can anyone help me choose between them, or suggest something else entirely? The classes I've noticed are:

Rob Sheppard's "The Wow Factor"
Zuckerman's "Developing Your Creative Artistic Vision" or "Eight Steps to More Dramatic Photography"
Tony Sweet's "Image Design: Revealing Your Personal Vision"
Brenda Tharp's "Creating Visual Impact"

Any advice for a composition class?

  Hi Brian,
Great hearing from you, and I'm pleased that you plan to extend your studies here at BetterPhoto!

You probably can't go wrong with any of the classes that you mention. But if you haven't already, here are a few thoughts for you (or anyone else reading this) to help narrow down course options:

- Be sure to check out the course outline, which is almost always much more specific than the main course page.

- Look over the instructor's photos, too. In many cases, the type of subjects that an instructor shoots won't matter if the course topic that he/she teaches is just what you're looking for. But when the choices are tough, then you might consider an instructor who shoots more of the subjects that you like to shoot.

Just a few thoughts, Brian :-)

For convenience, here's the 8-week course listing (links to outline, instructor pics, etc., at the top of each course page):

Thanks,
Kerry

Hi Brian – from a former student viewpoint, you can’t go wrong with any of the classes. However, I took both Brenda’s and Tony’s class and, IMO, they are both amazing instructors. I never got the chance to take a class with Jim or Rob – but, if life ever allows, I would love to take their classes. I started out with Kerry’s class (which was a great place to start) and then took a couple of classes with Brenda (who is inspirational) before taking my first class with Tony (who is tough – in a good way – but wonderfully encouraging). Personally, this order worked well for me and I’m glad I started with Brenda before my class with Tony. I found his class a bit more advanced in some aspects and was glad to have the background of Brenda’s class first. Hopefully, this will be of some help to you in making your decision.

Thanks for the input, Kerry! I'd found the course outlines, but it didn't occur to me to look at instructor photos.

Irene, thank you for your insight into Brenda and Tony. Knowing what you think about the order of taking the classes is really helpful. I think I may approach things the same way (but I'm going to go look at their photos first).

Hi Brian...I'm a little late responding to this, but I have taken several courses with Jim Zuckerman and highly recommend his classes...a great instructor with many levels of classes to choose from.
