  Hi Mona,
Thanks for your interest in BetterPhoto's online photography courses! Our classes are interactive, with great feedback from top pros with lots of teaching and publishing experience - including books and articles for leading photo magazines.

Here are some options that might be great choices for you:

PHOTOSHOP:

For an excellent introduction to the digital darkroom:
Beginning Photoshop for Photographers

PHOTOGRAPHY AND YOUR D-SLR CAMERA:

For courses that will get you up and running with your Canon 5D, you might want to consider this specific class:
Learning the Canon 5D, 1D Mark IIn and 1Ds Mark II

However, if you feel you need a good grounding in the fundamentals of photography (i.e., shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc.), then you might consider this course (by the same instructor, Jim White, as the 5D class):
Learning Your Canon Digital SLR

Or here's an excellent 8-week option:
Digital SLR Photography with Vik Orenstein

Thanks again Mona, and let me know if you have further questions!

Kerry

  Hi Mona,
Welcome to Better Photo. I have followed the same idea you mentioned of taking techniques type classes along with Photoshop classes. I really enjoy taking them and I learn a lot very quickly. The interaction between students/instructor is an added bonus.
The instructors here are very talented, knowledgeable & helpful (as Kerry has already shown with some great recommendations). Its easy to find inspiration looking through all the galleries on this site and the classes will make the learning curve more effecient & enjoyable.
I am taking a 10 day photo tour this summer to Europe and am hoping to get the 5D before I leave for the trip. I currently use a 40D (that has a 1.6 cropped sensor) but I want a full frame camera for landscape photos. The tour is being led by an instructor here at BP - Jim Zuckerman. I have taken 3 classes with Jim and to be able to shoot side by side with him for 10 days will be a real treat. The last class I took from him was a Corel Painter class. This is also a fun software program but you should concentrate on Photoshop first since it is a vital program for digital photographers.
There are many general & specialized courses and as you grow, you will find another class that will be the next logical step for you.
I have a friend that uses a 5D, his main lens is the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS and that is one great combination. He creates beautiful images with that setup.
Get yourself a tripod & get signed up.
Have fun Mona...

  Hi Mona,
Thanks for the followup ... and excellent choices!

All of BetterPhoto's classes, galleries, etc., can handle those operating systems. Many (though not all) instructors use Macs (I use a PC), and many students use PCs (but not all). So it's really your choice ... you can't go wrong!

Hope this is helpful, Mona ... let me know if you have further questions ... and enjoy your classes!

Kerry

You're welcome, and your plan sounds great - we have lots of fun (and creativity) in that class! Until then, I know you'll enjoy learning more about D-SLR photography and Photoshop!

Hi Mona, I used a PC for years and recently switched to MAC and I really do love my 24" IMAC more than any computer I have ever owned. The one disadvantage of using MAC was that a lot of software would not work on them but now you can install parallels on the newer Intel Duo Core MACs and run Windows & MAC programs. I have chosen not to run Windows on my MAC but may consider it since I really like the Photodex ProShow program and it is only available for PC. You have to decide between Photoshop for PC or MAC version but most photo editing software are available in MAC versions. Corel Painter was actually designed for MAC and then they made a PC version - which is backwards from the norm.
You need to consider the monitor & color calibration software as well. Some top line monitors sell for $2000 but I dont have that kind of $$. I found the IMAC monitor to be much better than my $400 19" Gateway monitor (bought 3 years ago)I use for my PC. I am still using Colorvision Spyder2 color calibration (for about $80) although Spyder3 is now available. Color calibration is easy to install and will keep your colors consistant. If you add a printer, you will need to set your printer to the profile you create for your monitor calibration (I name mine Spyder2) so that what you see on your monitor will match what prints out. You may be covering some of this in your classes and you can always start a discussion with the class and get the instructors advice.
I do love my IMAC and working on the 24" screen is very nice as well.
