Photography Question

Buying Accessories on the Web or via Mail-Order

Are there any downsides to buying new photo accessories either off a site on the internet or from a photo magazine?

I'm going to buy a light meter soon and would like to know if there are any drawbacks to buying in other than a regular retail outlet. Are the savings from buying off the net, etc. worth it? Are there any warranty questions if you do not buy at regular retail? In advance, thanks.

I buy most of my supplies and equipment online. Even with shipping costs I can save money. If you stay with reputable established businesses like B&H, Adorama, or CameraWorld you will have few problems. One consideration is freight costs on smaller items. I order large quantities of film at one time to spread the shipping costs out over each unit. Otherwise it wouldn't be worth the added shipping cost.

I just bought a Nikon kit, two lenses, filters and a ton of film online. I also bought accessories for my digital camera. I was able to conduct comprehensive research, and completed the best job of comparison shopping I have ever undertaken. I am extremely pleased with my purchases, and the manner of their delivery, even though the whole process took place during and after the Sept. 11 disruptions. I did make two offline purchases because I wanted to put my hands on and test a tripod and camera bag. Online purchasing is considerably cheaper.

I have just spent over 500 UK pounds in equipment buying online from a store overseas. The total cost (equipment/shipping/duties) was still less than what I would have paid in my own country. Furthermore, I could easily compare products, seek advice, and hunt for best prices. I have some accessories for my new SLR that are on their way too. I was worried about the safety of the equipment during shipping, but it was very well packaged.

I have made several purchases from Canoga Camera (canogacamera.com), and found them to be a great source! They are priced competetively, and in most cases have the lowest price I can find, and they have excellent customer service. The one time that the item I ordered was not in stock, I got an email right away, and got my order within a few days. Great people!
