Shooting sports indoors

I shoot a lot of basketball and figure skating indoors. I use a Canon EOS 10D with a Sigma Aspherical 70-200mm f2.8 lens. I have tremendous difficulty getting the correct color balance. In our university's gym I get a lot of orange tint, and in the rink I get a lot of reds/purples. I have tried the various preset WB settings, and even manually setting color temp, all with disappointing results. The white jerseys or costumes are never crisply white. Se attached images as examples.

Images didn't attach. I don't have an answer for you, but am interested if someone does. :)

It's doubtful any of the presets will match up to the gymnasium lights. You said you tried manually setting the color temp - did you mean directly setting the K, or did you use Custom White Balance (meter off a white subject or gray card under the gym lights)? I'd be surprised if Custom White Balance didn't work for you. Also, just to cover all possibilities, what exposure mode did you use? Note that the Basic modes (icons and green box) use AWB (Auto White Balance) only. The presets, Custom White Balance, and Color Temperature settings are only in effect when shooting in P, Av, Tv, M, and A-DEP modes.

Sounds to me like a time to shoot in RAW an adjust the white balance on the computer. The Canon Digital Photo Pro software which ships with the cmera is excellent or this, or you can use Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro etc.

I used my husbands old Minolta Maxim 5000 with 400 speed fil, a telephoto lens and the normal flash and they came out beauifully. All of the colors are right on and the shots are stopped still. Did I mention I was shooting individual players like the pro's do and some of the parents preferred mine over the pro's.
I'm sorry I can't send a pic right now, I don't know how to attach one. I find all digital camera's just aren't fast enough, and believe me I TRIED. I tried many digital camera's to shoot my boys and it's just too slow no matter how I try.
Any advice on how to get a digital camera.
sorry I couldn't be more help just had to add some info on the tried and true methods.

Laurie just mentioned a really good point. Check your film speed in your digital camera. It is usually automatically set at 200 or 100 set it at 400 and you might get a little closer. Along with the custom white balance. There is not a major difference in the 'speed' with the way that a film camera is and a 10D is.

If their was ever an occasion to shoot in RAW this would be it.

I shoot JPG most of the time, but switch to RAW when shooting in tricky lighting. That way you can adjust the white balance once you get home without too much effort.
