Shutter Synchronization: What Is It?

When talking about an external flash, what does it mean when it says "shutter synchronization"? I have the Sony F707, and when using the flash, it takes a very long time to take the picture. I end up not using the flash. Indoors is fine when I use fill light, but when trying to shoot outdoors and there is a lot of shade ... it just doesn't cut it. I'd like to purchase an external flash, but I'd like it to take the picture immediately like it does when I don't use a flash. Does this make sense? I hope my friends at BetterPhoto can help ... there are just so many knowledgeable people here. Thanks to all!

In general, shutter synchronization means the flash doesn't fire until the front shutter curtain is completely open, and the rear shutter curtain hasn't started to move yet. Usually this means a shutter speed between 1/60 and 1/180 of a second. This should not cause your shots to be delayed. Is it possible that the delay is due to the flash charging?

Hello Nicole G. I also shoot a Sony DSC-F707 and I love it. I often use a flash and never had a problem. I use a HVL-F1000 that I purchased from Sony on line. I ues it alot indoors, It works great to bounce off the ceiling. It also fires my other strobs in the studio.Hope this helps. Tom

Thank you both for answering. Thomas, I am looking at purchasing the HVL-F1000 for my 707. I'm glad to know it works well. The problem I have is the flash in the camera. When the flash is on and I go to take the picture there is a delay...the picture doesn't actually take until the flash is done doing it's little thing. And by then (especially when shooting children), the moment is lost. I've never used an external flash before and wasn't quite sure how it worked. With your 707, when you push the shutter without the flash, it takes it right away, right? Does it still take it right way with the HVL-F1000 attached or does it delay like the flash within the camera? I really hope I'm making sense because I'm starting to confuse myself! :) Since you're familiar with the camera, I'd really like more of your imput. THANK YOU!!!

Have you got red eye reduction on? That would cause a delay, and should only be used with posed shots.

AHHHAAA, I do have that on. I'll try turning it off. Thank you, Peter!

Red-eye reduction? On a camera? I though red-eye reduction was when you cut back on the booze.
