Macro Lens for Film and Digital Cameras

I recently purchased a Sigma 50mm macro lens that I'm using on my film-based Canon Elan-7. Can I use this same lens on a digital SLR, say the new Canon 20-D digital camera? The Sigma is for Canon AF. It's a 2.8 DG Macro,EX. Your reply would be most appreciated.

Generally, yes. Any lens made for the EF mount can be used with Canon's digital SLRs. However, third-party lens makers - Sigma, in particular - have had a problem with their lenses not maintaining compatibility with the most recent EOS releases. They backward-engineer the electronic communication between the lens and camera and don't always get it 100 percent. The original 50 f/2.8 EX Macro is one of Sigma's lenses that has had this problem. The DG version of this lens is newer and may be fine with the 20D. If using it on a 20D or other new EOS locks up the mirror/shutter or displays "Err 99", contact Sigma and they can update the lens's ROM chip to restore compatibility.
