Smart Media Card

I have a Dazzle drive card reader. I removed my SmartMedia card from my camera, put it in the Dazzle drive, and transferred the pics to my PC. Then I deleted the pics from the card, using Windows Explorer. Now when I put the card in my camera, I get a card error and can't use the card. This is the second time this has happened! I am able to copy pictures back to the card using Windows Explorer, but I can't get it to work in my camera. Can anyone help me?

Try putting your card back into your Dazzle reader, open "My Computer", click on the card drive. Delete all on the card. Then create a folder called DCIM. Then put card back into your camera and see if it works. It may also need to be re-formatted by your camera.

P.S.- Once you get the card working, DO NOT use Windows Explorer to delete your photos; delete the photos using your camera's menu option for deleting all photos. Then you won't keep having this problem re-occur.

If your camera has a format memory function, you should format the card. The function will both erase the card and assure that it is set up properly for your camera.

You need to format the card afterwards. You shouldn't use it without reformating it anyway. I always empty the card with Explorer but have never tried to reuse it first without formating. So, that must be your problem.

Seems to me that when she quoted"Now when I put the card in my camera, I get a card error and can't use the card. ", that she can't access the function to reformat the card due to the error of the card. This occurs when the DCIM folder has been deleted in my experience. So, until she deletes all on the card and creates a folder named DCIM, the camera won't be able to "communicate" & format the card.

You are right, I can't format the card with my camera. I also tried creating the DCIM folder, to no avail. I found the Dazzle website (www.ziocorp.com); their tech support people emailed me this: "There was an issue with a small batch of readers that causes the problem you are having. The good news is that it is fixable. It is a 2 pronged attack Upgrading the firmware will keep the issue from ever happening again. The next step would be to then use a format utility to recover your cards to their original state."
They indicated that the format utility was attached to the email, but it wasn't; I am waiting for a reply with the utility attached, and hopefully that will rescue my cards. I will let you know.

From now on I will not delete except with my camera, even after the drive is repaired.

Thanks to everyone for your help!

Hi I also had the same problems listed here with my Olimpus camera and a GE Card reader.
I went to the Olimpus Dealer with two Smartcards. They can see the card and the photos, but when they try to format them with their computer it was not possible. So I am in the starting point, with 2 unusable cards. I would appreciatte any help . Thanks.

Hi, I contacted Zio support at www.ziocorp.com and emailed them regarding this problem. They sent me an RMA number and asked me to send the drive in to them for repair. They say that after the repair is done I should download some firmware and then I will be able to format my cards.

To be honest I have not yet sent the drive in for repair; it works okay as long as I do not delete the photos using the reader, and I have needed to use my camera a lot during the holidays so I did not want to do without the reader. I am hoping that when I get the repaired driver back and use it to format the cards, they will work in my camera again. If they still don't work I strongly feel that Zio owes me new cards, and I will certainly express that to them. I had a brand new 128 mb card ruined the first time I used it.

Anyway, don't delete photos from the smartcards except by using your camera to delete them, and contact ziocorp to get your reader repaired. I know this does not answer all your questions but hopefully it will help.

p.s. I was still able to read the cards with the card reader, and could even transfer files to them; the are just not recognized when in my camera. I plan to send the drive in for repair during the next week, and will let you know what results I get.

Thanks for taking the time to post this information; I have already tried this thanks to your post in November. When I put the card back in my camera after creating the new DCIM folder, a screen comes up where I can select "yes" to format the card. When I do this, about 2 seconds go by (I guess it's trying to format) and then I get "card error" on the screen. Hopefully Zio will make good on this. My problem is that I am able to use my other cards and the reader now that I know not to delete using the reader, and I don't particularly want to do without the reader while it is in for repair. Oh well, c'est la vie!
