Road to Stykkishólmur
Shortly after fixing a surprise flat tire, we were back on the road to catch our car ferry out of Stykkishólmur to the Westfjords.
I loved how the roads in Iceland wind off and shrink into the distance, yet stay visible in the vast landscape.

Morning Light
Sunlight pours through slender clear windows in the apse of the austerely elegant, gothic-influenced Hallgrímskirkja of Reykjavik. Iceland's largest
church took 38 years to complete, in 1986. It dominates the city skyline, featuring an observation deck way up in the single front bell tower.

South Iceland
The landscape (and the weather) is so variable in Iceland. Beautiful meadows abruptly meet serious slopes and rocky mountains at every turn.
Three tiny bright specks about halfway up the slope right of center are sheep; we continually saw them even higher up these hills and mountainsides.
Icelandic sheep are often found grazing in little clusters of three; typically two newborns and the mother.

Sitting Pretty
We had hoped to see our first puffin at Látrabjarg on day 4 of the trip; instead, it was not until day 8, near Vik, visiting cliffs at Dyrhólaey.
There, hundreds of puffins dotted the cliffs, and you could easily get within 10 feet of some of them. They're quite charming to watch!
The weather was the worst we had (chilly, windy, rainy all day) and watching the puffins fly into and land in the strong winds was somewhat comical.

I don't know if this was someone's backyard, or an adjacent vacant lot, in Reykjavik. The colorful graffiti and collection of bike tires caught my eye.

We saw this beautiful set of falls from the road in south Iceland; entirely at ground level and below, falling about 8 or 10 feet over several cascades.
Definitely a fun place for a Variable ND filter; I ended up with a 2.5 second exposure here.

Brooklyn Brick & Block
The remains of the old, Civil War-era tobacco warehouse just below the massive Brooklyn Bridge.
A recent controversial deal will allow a theater to be built within the walls of this historic building shell.
I liked the pairing of round arches in the wall, with the famous gothic arches of the bridge beyond.

Park Bench
A bench wrapped around the base of a park statue in Reykjavik; I liked the lines of the wood slats, particularly
where they met diagonally at the corner, combined with the joints of the pavers on the ground below.
The round screw heads created another set of lines, and the faded blue graffiti and traces of old red paint
added a bit of color to the browns;
I stood on the bench aiming straight down, balancing carefully to get my feet out of the shot ;)

Stonecarver
One of the most charming gargoyles at Washington National Cathedral; a depiction of the cathedral's beloved
past Master Mason, Roger Morigi. His staff of carvers created this gargoyle as a tribute, reportedly carving
it in secret, and not revealing it to Morigi until installation. Maybe with good cause, as they chose to
immortalize some of his worst character flaws, tongue-in-cheek. Here, Morigi pulls his hat down in anger
(a famous temper!) to release a nuclear mushroom cloud, while devil's horns poke through the hat as well. He
clutches a chisel, with more carving tools in his pocket. A pointed tail grows from his backside.
One foot wears a shoe with a hole in the sole; the other foot is shown as a hoof.
Not seen here, on the far side, a mallet, and a whiskey flask and stiletto in the other pocket.
He sports a 5 o'clock shadow, and is wearing a favorite golf club sweater.

Patreksfjörður Evening
Later in the evening (the sun didn't set until after 9:30pm) on the drive to our first hotel in the Westfjords of Iceland.
The sweeping lines of the clouds gave an excuse to stop for a bit - at times the main road (at the right) felt like the edge of a cliff!

The Garðar
The (deliberately) beached ship Garðar, in the Westfjords of Iceland. The name suggests "stronghold" in Old Norse.
The ship sits at the base of the Patreksfjörður; we came across it late in the afternoon on a sunny drive to Breiðavík.

Two popped up for me this month and one (Fascination) was a re-do off an older EP. Jeff and Chris - Good luck with round 2. Jeff, I knew the first time I saw the shattered ball that you had a winner! And Chris...I love the description on the gargoyle as I had taken a shot of him at the Cathedral but knew nothing about him. Yours is well worthly of BP but mine were just so-so.Nothing to write home about.

I love the summer months there because late in the day, the sun peeks barely around the corner of the building, to hit this gargoyle on the north side of the building, which is the rest of the year, never in direct sun. Masterpiece Membership
Thinking about signing up for Masterpiece Membership. Curious as to what others have experienced in this group? Likes and dislikes. I'm fairly new to photography but have developed a great passion for it. I've taken 2 classes and things are starting to click and my photography is really improving. I want to keep learning, growing and receiving feedback but need a break from the weekly assignments. Any thoughts, comments and recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've been in MM since Feb 2009. It's educational, fun, aggravating, confusing, motivational, fulfilling........ All for only $49 a month...which, if you figure it out, is cheaper than a 4 week class.
Anyway, it's moderated/run by Kerry Drager...who assigns, and, explains, the monthly "Mission" with pictures and links to examples. There's a Q&A forum for questions (Duh?) and a critique forum to submit pictures that you need help on or would like comments on..Kerry is very good about answering questions and critiquing promptly.
The "mission" pictures go into a separate area and are commented on and voted on by other MM members. When the "mission" month is over, there are a few days for stragglers to vote on pictures, then Kerry makes his choices and the top 10 images for that month are announced.
I hope some of this made sense.... It's hard to capsulate the whole thing in a couple sentences. If you have any other questions or need something explained further, feel free to ask me. I'm retired, so I have lots of time... ;-)

Marcy: I've been in MM for awhile (although not as long as Bob, he has seniority I think), and in addition to the benefits of a monthly challenge, which I enjoy and find motivating (although admittedly struggle some months to find just the "perfect" masterpiece shot), the unexpected benefit has been Kerry's availability to critique not just the monthly submissions, but any shot. For your monthly fee, you are essentially buying a pro to look over your shoulder and give advice on any aspect of your photography. I find that as valuable as the monthly challenge. You also get the opportunity to connect with other photographers; I recently vacationed in an city with a MM member and we met up for a day to shoot. Plus, you can come and go anytime, no commitment beyond each month. Each month all the entries are up for vote for the winner and top 10 finishers. I have learned not to obsess over this. Hard to anticipate how people react to your shots, not unlike submitting to the regular BP contests each month. Hard to see your "greatest shot ever" be ignored! On the other hand, a shot you didn't think that highly of can get a good reaction. I think you can find the top finishers each month on the main BP page, so you can get a sense of what the level of the participants is...I think it is all over the board, from pretty serious, experienced photographers to folks like me who are somewhat new to the concept of being serious about photography, and skill levels that range from intermediate to highly skilled. I don't think there are many "beginners" in MM. I think most members have taken some BP classes.

Thanks Greg! Great information and really helps me to know what I'm getting into. I've take 2 classes - 16 weeks and my photography has really jumped a level, though I would still consider myself an advanced beginner as there is so much to learn. I really enjoy the comraderie of the classes but I am always sad when the class ends. MM sounds like to might be a great experience and I'm going to give it a try for November. Thanks again!

Kerry and I often wonder if the word "Masterpiece" in the title of this group intimidates potential members. Although the original intention was to walk in Ansel's footsteps, and create at least one masterpiece a month, we could change the name to something that is more open to intermediate and serious enthusiast photographers. Any thoughts?

Jim - this is my third month as a member of Masterpiece Membership and what attracted me to look at it was the name. So I say keep it. I truly aspire to creating Masterpieces. I would have characterized myself as an advanced beginner serious hobbyist when I joined and I'm very much enjoying this group and the monthly challenges. The members are open and friendly. The level was not above my capabilities - I even had a photo chosen as #1 last month. My suggestion might be to leave the name but choose a tag line that encourages all. ie. An open and creative environment to help any serious photographer create winning photos. Hope that helps.

I guess I thought it was a more advanced class or more advanced skills than I have at this point. I am a serious enthusiast hobby shooter always wanting to get better. Perhaps it might be something I am ready to try. Congrats Marcy on doing so well in the club and winning a monthly challenge. Thats awesome.

Thanks Jackie! You should join this group. Your photos are beautiful and I'm sure those in the group would enjoy seeing them. I think you would enjoy it also. It provides the comraderie of the monthly discussion threads but more intimate. Plus you have the advantage of receiving critiques. Kerry is really wonderful and always gracious and responsive. I have learned so much from him and all the members of the group.

September '12 Countdown
aka Cocktails and Chocolate...
and what more perfect month to chow down on some choice chocolate with Halloween looming!I missed the 15th - this month is really zooming past. Happy Fall Y'all to those of us in North America. Happy other seasons to anyone who's is different. I'm seeing all these gorgeous fall foliage pics from friends in the Northeast and Midwest. It's still in the 80s here in Texas. I'm looking forward to some fall colors on a family trip soon. Helpful hints for attaching photos into Forum Threads:
1) Sign into BP completely (name + password.)
2) If you have NOT YET entered the Contest today, you can use the "Photo ID" to pull an existing image from your Member Center into your reply to this thread (avoiding a duplicate image upload.) Get the Photo ID# from your Member Center, come to back this thread, click Respond, enter the text of your reply, then choose "1" from the images-to-attach drop-down. Click Submit; at the next screen populate the "Photo ID" box at the right. Skip the other fields on that screen.
3) If you HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest today before replying to this thread, you can't use the Photo ID method today. You can either wait until tomorrow to reply here (before your new Contest entry!) or, upload a new copy of the particular image (from your PC) into this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery.
4) If you're uploading a duplicate, maybe title it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later... This can help direct viewers to find the original image in your gallery, when they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate---that way, if the duplicate is deleted later, the comment history isn't lost. Mælifell & Bjarnarfoss
The view from the front door of Hótel Búðir on the Snæfellsnes peninsula; the conical mountain is Mælifell, while the slender waterfall is Bjarnarfoss.
The incoming tide creates the pool each day, amidst the moss-covered lava field surrounding the hotel.

I spent 10 days in Iceland in the 2nd half of August on my first-ever visit there, and it was the most spectacular trip I've ever taken! So September had 28 Iceland entries from me, making it very hard to choose just one. I'm choosing this one because I feel that landscape is not my first subject of choice usually, but I'm thrilled with how this one turned out.

Curious Wild Mink
Take two on this little guy - went back next day same time to see if this location was a habit but he was a no show. Good thing he cooperated the first and probably last time I saw him! What looks like an injured toe is not, I thought it was but its not in other (not so good images)of the same foot, must have been left over breakfast or something on the boardwalk that I did not notice.

Having some time to explore, at last. Figured I'd FINALLY get a look at Sept. entries you all shared!
5 of you now, and hopefully the other 5 later today (for the 10 who provided directions to view their Sept. Hope I'm not missing anyone when I went through this thread!)
And given my tardiness on this task, I opted to choose two favorites each -- it was actually too hard to pick just 1, so here's hoping multiple Finalists for all! :)Jeff: US Capitol Building. Alien. Trying really hard to avoid my bias for the cathedral :) Carolyn: Sunset on Steriods. '33 Chrysler in Black. That car is quite a photo subject, and of course, you have access to some of the most stunning sunsets around! Jackie: Lil Girl Candid. Step Inside My Beautiful Balloon. The portrait is winsome, and the balloon festival must have been amazing! Susan: Beneath Me. Inviting. Wow, your floral close-ups are fantastic. Would LOVE to get any tips on lighting, etc.---as winter approaches, I become a hibernator, and trying some florals inside might be nice! Martha: Awake. Tropical Morning. Nikki - Children's Cascade or Sunrise SunsetChris, thanks so much for the awesome compliment on my floral close-ups. As for lighting, I always try to go natural first. Lately I've photographed a lot of florals out on my front deck. I just take backgrounds out there or use the woods or lawn as a backdrop. I can usually find an indirect sun (unless it's overcast) spot vs. using a diffuser. I'll use bounce and fill flash to eliminate shadows if I don't want them. My second choice has always been natural light from a window. Preferably softer early morning light and same with the flash (if needed). A reflector opposite the light is great in this set-up. The last studio lighting type shots I did were using just one light (like a hardware store can light (diffused) at 45 degree angle, a reflector opposite and I bounced flash from the wall above. I'm sure I'll use option 2 or 3 vs. freezing my butt off outside this winter! I can't wait to see your florals! And I want to ask you about your EoD and architectural shots: how do you manage to get these with no people in the shots? In DC, no less. I live only an hour south of DC and while I don't go into the city on any regular basis, I would like to go for a photo shoot sometime. And also, do you use flash indoors? Am also hunkering down for Sandy and not looking forward to a power outage...again! At least I have 3G on my crackberry and lots of images loaded and ready to submit (part of my emergency planning!! lol)! Be safe, everyone!

Oh Marcy, make sure someone checks on ur house and ur kitteh! As for water we had 4 cases left over from the derecho (sp?) That went thru in July. Half of those are in my freezer along with prob a dozen gallon milk jugs repurposed with water and frozen. Keeps the freezer cool and gives us water :) I sure hope they announce early tomorrow before Sandy takes a left turn into my backyard.

Thanks Ken. This was actually the same exact photo just converted to B&W. The colored version got an EP and the B&W didn't. What's even stranger is that my photo course instructor's recommended converting to B&W and they liked that version more - as did I. Oh well, just wierd not the end of the world. Trying to figure out what makes the judges tick - only goes to show you that they don't want to be figured out :)

Jackie - those falls are beautiful! I agree with Marcie. Cropping some of the sky and foreground may be beneficial. I'm still trying to figure out how BP selects EPs. I've seen some very questionable photos get EP and I wonder what are they looking at? Just Exposure and Focus? I've even thrown some photos I don't like of mine into the contest and they still get EP.

Thanks Ken and Marcie, Very good points and suggestions. Might be a definate improvement getting it out of the center.I will crop as you suggested and try again. :) Sometimes when I take a shot/enter I am not looking at it with a detached pov. Its important to try to do.

Created indoors using a flash. Taken with my 35mm lens at f2.2 at a range of about 12 inches from subject. This left a very centered focal point at the corner of the dish with the rest of the candy fading into the background.

Creepy Lady I
Happy Halloween! This is a 3-D model my daughter created in her theatre props class. I thought it would make a fun photo model and worked with lighting and editing to get this effect. This was taken indoors in a window with light shining into the tree outside the window. I also used a table light inside to highlight the model and so I could work without a flash. In Photoshop, I adjusted the saturation in the raw file to mute the colors in an attempt to attain of sense of horror. I used a f/20 and ISO 400 to give clarity to the trees. Ended up being a neat effect as it really distorts the perspective of how near or far the model and the trees are.

deluxe sites
I now have a basic website and am thinking of moving up to the deluxe site. My question is - will my photographs from my basic site automatically go to my deluxe site and will those that access my old site be redirected to the new site?

Hi Cathy---there are a lot of new features in the Deluxe site, that the Basic doesn't have. You can create Albums (and albums within albums) for grouping your photos.
All the images you've uploaded to BP, are available for you to display (or not display) in your Deluxe. When I set mine up, I recall having to pick which ones I wanted to display---my Deluxe didn't match my Basic, in terms of images that displayed. (Nor did I want it to.)
I still have a Basic, and that address/URL is entirely different from my Deluxe. However, from my Basic, there's a link under every photo, to my Deluxe site.
I believe you can also deactivate from display, all your Basic gallery images, and only have them on display in your Deluxe, but I've never tried that.

Christopher is correct, (Thanks Christopher!) and your images will automatically be available in your website admin center > photos tab > photo manager.
To have photos only on your website, you would mark them with the "Private" checkbox, and then make sure that the "Display" checkbox is not checked.

I see that people today on a thread said that the finalists were announced for August. How did they find that out? The page for Contest finalists is still only up to July! I'm confused!

Karen - if you go to the Contest page and click Recent Finalists (rather than Previous Finalists) you will see the August selections. Once the winners are announced, you can also see these under Previous Finalists. Also, if you have a finalist, BP will send you an email. I think it would be nice if BP sent emails to everyone once the selections were made, whether they received one or not.

August 2012 Cocktails and Chocolates
Well hello there! This month the 15th got here too fast for me! I'm a day late - sorry all! It's back to school for kids here, and it's FINALLY cooling down (at least temporarily) here in Texas. I hope everyone else is enjoying temperate weather wherever you may be.Please join in the fun - pick your favorite, post it here and grab a bevvie and something sweet (or bitter if you like dark chocolate) and let's all see what the judges have in store for our August entries. Helpful hints for attaching photos into Forum Threads:
1) Sign into BP completely (name + password.)
2) If you have NOT YET entered the Contest today, you can use the "Photo ID" to pull an existing image from your Member Center into your reply to this thread (avoiding a duplicate image upload.) Get the Photo ID# from your Member Center, come to back this thread, click Respond, enter the text of your reply, then choose "1" from the images-to-attach drop-down. Click Submit; at the next screen populate the "Photo ID" box at the right. Skip the other fields on that screen.
3) If you HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest today before replying to this thread, you can't use the Photo ID method today. You can either wait until tomorrow to reply here (before your new Contest entry!) or, upload a new copy of the particular image (from your PC) into this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery.
4) If you're uploading a duplicate, maybe title it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later... This can help direct viewers to find the original image in your gallery, when they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate---that way, if the duplicate is deleted later, the comment history isn't lost. Really a hard choice for me this time; I had several old favorites I had reworked & entered in August, which of course I love. A few of my brand new August images have me pretty hopeful as well. But then in the middle of the month, I went to Iceland for my sister's wedding, spent 10 days there (missing 9 days of making BP entries), came home with a few thousand shots, and managed to get 2 of them entered at the end of August. (As a result, September is likely to be 100% Iceland entries, so part of me feels I shouldn't pick an Iceland image for this thread ;)
So a real dilemma...!

Skógafoss
The massive wall of water that is Skógafoss in southern Iceland. The water falls about 200 feet with a powerful roar, creating a huge bank of mist.
Apparently during full flood, the wind created by the falls is strong enough to keep you from getting within 50 feet of the falls.

A very happy EID MUBARAK to all my Muslim Friends.
A composite from two shots, shot a few seconds apart (one focused on the mirror and the other focused on beyond, both in discussion thread below) from within the Jeep while on our way to Lulusar lake in the picturesque Kaghan Valley in Northern Pakistan.The green boxed along the road-side are for honey gathering from the bees who suck the honey from the abundant wild flowers of the region.A little PS fun afterwards and hence the category choice.

Wow, there are some good picks in the thread! But there always are :) Welcome to Ken! I had to do a search for the 2 photographers you listed which gave me the chance to look at galleries that I hadn't seen before (very nice, I might add). I have a hard enough time making picks from the thread participants here, and worse, my own! What's funny is I imagined you looking thru all EP's for the month! Which is when I realized I must have consumed waaayy too much caffiene or chocolate (don't drink)!! Lol. I think the total entries are usually like 11-12k! I think that Finalists make up about 6-7% of all of those but the EP percentages would be way way higher! That got me thinking about a question for our stats expert, Chris. Do we know how many participating photographers there are here on BP? Just food for thought (as if chocolate weren't!) While we are so patiently waiting...hehe...

Susan, I don't have any stats on # of active/participating members. There are 8,704 members shown in the "All Members with Finalists" listing, tucked away in BP's Site Map. However, that is historical (ie, going way back) and so a portion of those members are likely no longer here, but still shown in the list---and it doesn't count members who haven't had a Finalist yet, or, who don't participate in the contest... (PS - there are 3,455 members listed on the "Members with Wins" listing.) I hope to break into the "top 20" of each list one day! ;) If only I could convince the current top 20 to stop entering for several months... hehehe! Regarding the contest stats, the current average (from 81 monthly contests) is still a high 21,422 entries per month---however, that includes the "peak" months when BP got some 38,000 entries! 2012's average is about 11,700. The 81-month average hit rate for Finalists is 3.81%. But again, that includes exceptionally low months, where only 1% of entries made Finalist in the past. 2012's average Finalist rate is 6%. I've never attempted to count EP's from a single month, but my gut instinct says something like 50% (or more) of all entries make EP.

Unfortunately there isn't a set way to do it at BP---it depends on whether each member, themselves, "groups" their monthly entries together in their own gallery display. (ie, some members keep their galleries in chronological order, or create an Album for "Last Month", etc., while some do not.) During any given month, you can view all current entries for that month, but for all members... but there isn't a link/button you yourself could use to view, say, my own August entries directly.

Good idea, Ken! I used to use fav's quite a bit but haven't since returning. I do chronological where my current entries are first, then the prior months follow right after the ones that have received finalist or better. I also use the old, or classic, gallery style, mostly because 30 images show up on one page versus only 8 at a time. It's the lazy in me, probably. Oh, and I've also seen members make up a pic that will say "August Entries" and put that pic at the beginning of that month. More people probably did that tho, before the new galleries came out. But as Chris listed, those are about the only ways to know and some thread commenters here will list where theirs are. Interesting stats, Chris. I'm sure you'll break into that top twenty no matter what! I wish I had the time to go thru any categories EPs and try to guess which ones would be chosen. Like Carolyn says, it can be head scratching as to the ones they don't choose. I sometimes try and browse the finalists for categories (a much smaller group!) and try to guess which will move forward! The whole thing can be kind of addicting lol!

Ken, took a look at ur Aug folder (great idea :). While I like Maid of the Mist I think Niagra Falls closeup is my fav. The landscape elements make a great frame, the sky is a good contrast and I love the water color.

Water Lilly Pond
I spent over 4 hours wondering around the Getty Villa Museum in Malibu. It had beautiful gardens and these wonderful water lilly ponds that just fascinated me. I took many photos I liked but my friends seem to enjoy this one the most so I thought I would share it.

This is a really great thread and I look at it a lot. All of your photos are so amazing! I joined BP in July and am a "newbie" to photography. My photos have received a lot of EPs and I am hoping one day I'll get a finalist selection. I still have a lot to learn to get to the caliber of your photos but the journey is so much fun. August is only the second month I entered the contest but I am hoping that just maybe... My favorite for August is my Water Lily Pond piture which I'm attaching. Good luck to everyone! Marcy, you will not be disappointed with Iceland! I would love to go back, even for a long weekend in Reykjavik. When you go, aim for some summer months, to help ensure some beautiful Iceland weather (but be prepared for some beautiful grey Iceland weather just the same!) Unless you're going specifically for winter photography, of course!

She was dressed for prom in the image. Keshia Rain has a beautiful voice and is working on a singing career now working out LA and Atlanta Georgia. Her music should come out shortly. Well, the March finalists weren't announced until 5/2 and the winners not until 5/4. The lateness that month generated a lot of concern in the community (see the countdown thread for some interesting reading) so it's possible there was a concerted effort to get the finalists out early this month, if the judges knew the winners were going to be late. Pure conjecture on my part of course! I think the bottom line is there is no hard and fast rule about announcement timing.

BP's sated guideline is to announce winners by the last day of each month. They've definitely set the bar ahead of that for 99% of all the prior months! Still, they have all day today to release the winners "on time." I think I only recall them missing that mark once or maybe twice in 82 months!

I'd guess the winners would announce today... But the folks involved in EP selection (in my opinion) generally are not the same folks involved in Winner selection, so I don't equate catch-up in EP's to mean the Judges are done evaluating... My two cents!

Susan S. --- No it's not a bad thing to have a photo published in a book. Sorry if it sounded that way. I made good money for that session so that is never a disappointment. He was how I found out otherwise I would have went all day without knowing. I was actually in the middle of a photo session when I got the news; of course I was distracted after that....lol. Congrats to all the winners! I'm sure some of you have discovered this, but for those that haven't: Yes! You can turn OFF ADS!
We are excited about this new feature!
Betterphoto members who are current and past students, Pro and Deluxe Website owners, current Basic photo gallery owners, and of course the Masterpiece membership group can all opt out of ad viewing from your
member center>member info tab>Gallery Ad Default area. You can turn them on or off at the Gallery Ad Default area at any time. The default is ON (to view ads). You MUST be signed in for the ads to Not to appear. Otherwise you will be viewing just like a random visitor and see the Google ads.

Thanks, Jeff, for pointing this out! How nice to have it get rid of the ads in the "middle" of the browse-recent-contest-entries screen! Makes viewing recent entries much more enjoyable!

I noticed yesterday that they were gone, but mine had been set for them to be off, not by me, but I'm glad it's set that way. I sure do appreciate it. Saves a lot of time.

Which class to take next
Hi,
I have taken 2 classes so far, Both of the classes were with Charlotte Lowrie, A class on the Canon rebel and now that I got a new camera I took Understanding the Canon 60D. I am now ready to take another class or two I would like to take course in Closeups(4 weeks) and the wow factor(8 week ) course I don't know which one to take first and would appreciate ant feedback.

Thanks for your interest in BetterPhoto's online photography school!As for your next best course, the ones you mentioned - my Creative Close-ups or Impact in Your Photographs: The Wow Factor - are excellent, if I say so myself. :) Actually, neither is dependent on the other as a prerequisite, so you could take either one first - your preference. Just checking, though: Do you have a good handle on the fundamentals of exposure? i.e., looking at a scene in terms of what is the priority: depth of field (f/stop), or stopping or showing motion (shutter speed)? If you feel a brush-up on the basics would be good, then I would recommend Pro Tips for Great Exposure ... it's an excellent four-week course that's offered each month. In any case, you can't go wrong with Close-ups and Impact/Wow! :) Hope this helps, Bill, and thanks again! Kerry Drager

Hey Bill – I float into BP every so often, checking to see what has changed (or not). I saw your question and because I am also considering another BP class, I thought I’d share my experiences. It’s been a couple of years since I took a class here, but every class I took (and I took quite a few) was excellent and well worth the investment. The biggest challenge is deciding whether your skill/knowledge level is equal to what is being presenting in the class. You don’t want to get into a class on advanced lighting methods if you are still trying to master basic lighting! (Trust me, I did that!) I took both Creative Close ups and Creative Light and Composition from Kerry about five years ago. Even now, years later, after my skills have become more advanced, I still refer back to things I learned in these early classes. I never took the WOW class, but I think it would be very helpful and fun also. With one exception every class I’ve taken has benefited me in my career of doing nature and travel writing and photography. The single exception had nothing to do with the instructor, but was a mistake I made because I thought I knew more than I did at that time.

Hi Cynthia, For online courses, all class activity takes place in Campus Square. The emails you receive are just auto-notification of activity that involves critiques or comments on your uploaded photos, and if there are further comments on any discussions. But also important is checking out the critiques of classmates, etc. In Campus Square, the Photos area not only includes the "Upload New Photos" link for uploading, but also that's where all assignment submssions appear. Then, once a photo is commented on by a classmate, or critiqued by the instructor, the photo will automatically be duplicated in the Critiques area of Campus Square. For your photos, you should receive auto-notification by email. Hope this helps, Cynthia, and have fun in your class! Kerry

Have to say that I don't mind the ads at all. Could see that it would be a source of revenue for BP, which is always a good thing for a business and for the site.

This worked for me. We pay for this site (2X what I pay for Flickr, where there are no ads). If there must be ads, they should only be when not signed in. http://adblockplus.org/en/

Thanks BP for listening! Besides threads on this topic, I imagine it was a common theme in the summer survey. The ability to turn off ads is a BIG improvement (and is better than using a blocker since the images fill the screen). Super wonderful! I'm so happy! To avoid having to sign in every time, I sign in and then go to whatever page I use a lot and save it to my favorites/bookmarks..That way I rarely have to sign in. Just go to my favorites tab and click on wherever I want to go, like recent contest entries and I show up as signed in (most of the time)
