  1 .  Mirror less cameras by FUJI - X 10
HI all

I am planning to buy a FUJI FILM x10- model mirror less camera

Although I own a canon kit with 2 bodies and a few prime lenses which are bulky to carry when going oout on family trips and walk around shooting.

i ama in a dilemma which mirror less to buy.
The prime reason to buy a mirror less camera is for walk around shooting and for for family trips.
Am looking to buy a FUji Film X 10 - as it has a zoom lens fitted on ( dont hv to carry around a bunch of lenses)with a F 2.0-2.8 range.

Want to know your opinions on the image quality and performance of the kit.

Thanks All

Gagan, your delimma is being widely felt over the larger photographer base, and many are thinking seriously of taking the leap to lighter smaller cameras which are almost equal in quality and results to the heavier bulkier DSLRs of the current era.

I am a big believer that in the not-too-distant future, mirror-less cameras will be used widely by photographers and the high end DSLRs will survive and that too only by the professional photogrpaers.

In your quest of getting a mirrorless lightweight camera, I suggest you take a look at the below website which you might find helpful in making the decision. There is Fuji X100 and X100S too to consider.

And the results are usually announced at the end of the following month. For August, results late September. We should see the June contest results later this month. They'll first award Staff Favorites, followed by Finalists then Winners. Finalists are pulled from Staff Favs, and the Winners are pulled from the Finalists.

3 .  Countdown to June Contest Results
Hi everyone. Hard to believe, but it’s the middle of the month and time to share your favorite contest image(s) from June.

I’m also hoping for more participation from folks that have rarely, or never participated in this thread. I hope you’ll share your favorite photo(s) with us.

Looks like BP is making their 2nd pass-thru on the June EPs, so hopefully we'll see a more orderly flow of SFs, Finalists, and Winners.

Good luck!!

Some helpful hints for attaching photos into a BP Forum Thread, if you're unfamiliar with the process:

1) Sign into BP. IF YOU HAVEN'T entered the Contest for today, you can use the "Photo ID" method to pull an existing image (from your Member Center) into your Reply here. This avoids a duplicate image upload to your Member Center. Note the Photo ID# of the image you wish to include here (visible in your Member Center) then return to this thread, click Respond, enter the text of your reply, and choose "1" from the images-to-attach drop-down (even though you won't actually be uploading a file.) Click Submit; at the next screen, populate the "Photo ID" field shown over at the right. Skip the other text fields on that screen, check the boxes at the bottom, and Submit.

2) IF YOU HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest for today, you can't use the Photo ID method *today*. Either wait until tomorrow to reply here first, or upload a copy of the image (from your PC) and attach to this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery.

If you're uploading a duplicate, I suggest titling it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later on. This can also help nudge BP viewers to go find the original image in your gallery, if they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, first try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate... which may one day be deleted.

From Usman Bajwa...If you want to post more than one thumbnail in your response…once you have put the ID # in before entering the contest for the day and you are on the next screen which says something like 'the image has been added', just don't close the browser window, use the back arrow button on the browser window which should take you to the same page where you had initially entered the ID#. All you have to do now is change the ID with the one which you want and press enter again. And voila you'll have two images as thumbnails. You can append as many images as you want by using the back button of the browser window. It’s counter-intuitive, but it works.

As many if you know, I enjoy black and white photography. BP has seemed to follow my likes during recent months with the majority of my finalists being black and white. So I am going with my black and white favorites again this month.

Hey Erick, welcome aboard! A very cool concept with the "Connections." It took a 2nd look to see the couple in the photo, and then it all clicked. Very nice...same for you "Illusions." I've also liked the photos where the leading lines of different buildings converge into an interesting abstract. Good luck in the next round!

  5 .  mirrorless cameras
Has anyone had experience with mirrorless cameras? I purchased a Panasonic GX7 and a few lenses recently and am seriously considering using it as a replacement for my DSLR. I have been finding it increasingly difficult to carry my DSLR and lenses.

7/6/2014 8:02:31 AM

My husband Jack got a Canon EOS-M for his birthday/Father's Day last month and loves it. Our daughter-in-law's brother has an Olympus Pen E PM2 and loves his as well, although he said now that he's seen the Canon he likes it a bit better. Jack also bought an adapter so he can use all the lenses from his Canon DSLR on the new one. It comes with an 18-55.

7/7/2014 6:32:09 AM

Thanks for your response. I have been happy with my Canon 60D and lenses and I am struggling with the idea of replacing the DSLR system with a mirrorless system.

But so far, I am loving using the smaller, lighter camera.

  7 .  July Monthly Theme
July Monthly Theme is Photoshop Filters. I'd like to know if it means only PS own filters or any plug-in collection we can think of (Topaz, Nik, Alien Skin, etc.). Also it would be nice to know what kind of a filter(s) was used for every MT image.

Thank you.

7/2/2014 7:06:14 PM

I think a 3rd party plug-in filter like NIK, Topaz, Flexify, etc qualify as a Photoshop filter. Unclear if BP will clarify this. If not, I'll assume they are ok for theme.

Also, I don't view HDR or photo stitching as filters, even though they are part of Photoshop. I suppose it's a gray area.

7/3/2014 7:26:25 AM

Monnie and Ken, thank you for responding. I hope BP will clarify this. If a 3rd party plug-in filters can be used, why bother with this MT? Everything can be put in the Digital Darkroom. But then again, it's good when you can choose from the 2 categories.

Natasha, I like "Photoshop Filters" as a theme, especially if folks say which filters they use, and/or how they used them...an educational thing. If BP limits the theme to just those filters that come out of the box with Photoshop, then the judges will pass over a lot of the theme entries.

7/3/2014 10:37:53 AM

They never clarify ...they always leave it up to our own interpretation :-) This one should be fun as I use lots of NIK and Flaming Pear filters...Glad we can resubmit stuff!

7/3/2014 11:40:44 AM

I was wondering the same thing! Unless BP clarifies otherwise, I'm going to assume plug-ins are okay.

Happy filtering everyone! :)

7/3/2014 3:59:58 PM

I am also with all of you and understand this month's theme to mean that any filters (Photoshop supplied or other Company plug-ins) are fine as long as they are used in Photoshop. There are other filters which are stand-alone kind and don't require photoshop.

Jill, allow me to disagree with your statement "They never clarify", I believe BP have responded to quiet a few times specially recently in the last few months. And I am hoping that someone will clear the fog in this case too.

Happy shooting all.

UB.

7/3/2014 7:33:42 PM

  Hi Everyone,
A fine discussion here, and for everyone who thought plug-ins would be OK for this month's theme, you are correct :)

In fact, the July theme has just been updated to this:

Photoshop Filters and Plug-ins

Thanks for your interest in the contest, and have fun "filtering"!!

  Everyone Out There,

Can someone tell me what "Portrait Theme Day" is? Just curious. :-)

Thanks,

Jane, I've not heard about this either. Was it mentioned in a BP newsletter? Do you have a reference link to share?

Ken, Jane has probably seen a few entries entered at BP by the PG 101 Club members wherein the members compete for three to four Themes each month. This weeks Theme was "Portrait" in the club.

Usman, I thought it might have been from one of the local BP clubs. Thanks for chiming in.

  Usman,

Just a few questions. What are the benefits of being a club member? Would you recommend being a member? How much does it cost? Just curious. :-)

Jane, PG101 is a club on Yahoo groups. However, its members are all current or previous BPers. Its a fun club where members interact with each other and have activities like the Themes challenge. Here you can share and ask anything about photography and the members are generous in the sharing of knowledge.

I definitely recommend joining PG101. There are no fees as such, however, you are expected to give some time to the club.

If you or anyone else would like to join the PG101 club just send an email to either Kara Hendricks, Nikki MacDonald, Mitch Spence or Melinda Schneider and ask for an invite.

I have been a member of this club since 2008 and have greatly benefited from it and made many a friends too.

9 .  2 axis pan tilt vs 3 axis pan tilt
Does any body have any experience with pan tilt head for crane/jib?
Which pan tilt head is better 2 axis or 3 axis?
One of my friends gave me following options.
The price is quite good and quality seems well built.

  10 .  $ of my photos for someone's website
Someone is creating a new website on "Meditation" and she wants to use some of my nature photos on the website. She asked what I charge,(per photo) for this. I have NO idea what to tell her. Can someone please help me, she is waiting for my answer. Thank you,
Michèle

Some people just donate the photos in exchange for her giving you photo credit. I don't know what you would charge her if you want to charge at all.

I think this depends on where you are in terms of commercializing your work. If you have an established photography business then I think a small fee in return for exposure which would include a link to your website and perhaps a short bio would be appropriate. If you do not have an established business then I suggest you provide them for no charge in return for same.

She's looking for photos on the cheap. I can understand the desire to get some kind of return for your work, however it would be much better for you to find out the details of where the photos will be on the web site, how long she intends to use them, is this a business she's running(yoga classes,etc...) and whether she plans to use them in any other capacity.
You can check stock photo sites and see what royalty free image files can be priced as. You can use that as a starting point.
However, if you do start to ask about terms of usage, don't be surprised if you don't hear back from her. Sometimes this can turn out to be someone who's willing to use something off of google. She's not paying for a file, she's paying to use your image.
