From the CC....lol...I am a sucker for the Orton! I like this one, but I REALLY liked the square crop and now I am torn between that and the effects here! I like them both!!!! Wonderful job! This shot really has turned out to be fun for you, huh?

Thanks, Kerri ... I'm glad that you like it! Danielle, yes, this shot turned out to be a lot of fun! I think the Orton on this one helps the moon. Since the moon wasn't in this shot I had to put a ring around it to hide the edges and in the other version, I think the ring is too much. Back to the drawing board for that one then! LOL! Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments!

How cool-- I like this one best, Aimee. It gives it that extra dreamy feel. Very soft.... it is lovely! :)

Thank you very much for your comments Scott and Jennifer! I liked the other one more for it's clarity, but the Orton Effect does something to the moon to balance the shot. The moon in the other one just isn't working! You know what they say...."try try again"! LOL!

I do prefer the moon in this version, however, it is the branches that made my first instinct to go with this one. The other version seems rather sharp for a soft dreamy mood image...for example...my focus was lost in the details of the tiny branches of the other. Here- I view the entire image with ease...able to absorb the mood in full. The clarity appears to be perfect and I believe the effect to be done rather well. The light is wonderful and the contrasts are not overbearing. I think you could easily leave this one "as is" :)

Thanks Jennifer for your wonderful affirmation! I just spent an hour trying to work with the other one...even starting from scratch and it just isn't working for me so I think I'll keep this one and leave it at that! I don't give up easily, but I really value your opinion on this one and if you say it is a "go" then I'll "let it go"! :-)

Hi,
this is sooo beautiful. So can you describe what steps you use to get the Orton Effect in CS3. Thanks - Kimber

Thank you very much Kimber! It seems there are so many ways to do the Orton effect. I'll tell you how I did this one. Bring up you shot that you want to "orton" and make a duplicate "background copy". Then make an adjustment layer "levels" and set levels to 2.0. Now do that again. You should have 4 layers. 2 backgrounds and 2 levels. They should list like this: level layer, background copy, level layer, background. If they don't, rearrange them by drag and drop. Now select your backgroud copy and apply a gaussian blur 20 pixels (this can be more or less to your preferance, but I used 20 pixels). Your layer is probably set to "normal", but you want to set it to "multiply". Now flatten your image and you are done! For more ways of doing the Orton Effect put "Photoshop Orton Effect" into a search engine and you should find more info. I would also suggests looking in the forums here on BP as well. Hope I helped more than I confused! LOL! :-)

Aimee, The DD is the Digital Darkroom newsletter from BetterPhoto. In your member center, you can choose to receive it. It features 5 or 6 members' images that have some type of manipulation and share them with the readers. Yours was featured in today's, issue # 60.
Kimber, you might also look up this site, for additional info on the Orton technique: http://www.naturephotographers.net/articles0106/dw0106-1.html

Thank you very much Jennifer! I'm very proud of this one and for me to be proud of my own work is an achievment in and of itself! I'm usually very hard on myself!
