Kind of a cheezy pose, but this is how he explained to me that he could not sit still :)

Trying out a little more dramatic lighting, Ethan was handy. so I enlisted his help. Thought I'd better try this on a family member before I try it on a client :) let me know honestly what you think. You will not hurt my feelings!

Darling portrait, Jayme--and I like the pose! It must be nerve-wracking trying to catch him while he's moving, LOL! I really like the lighting, and think it would be flattering for a lot of your clients. The only thing I can think of to change, if you wanted to, is the lighting of the right side of his face--either by getting him to tilt his head up (still chin in hand, but maybe that elbow up on a table?). Just so his right eye would have a tad more light. Then again, what do I know, I don't even shoot portraits! :)

I agree wholeheartedly Colleen about the shadows. Maybe a reflector might work :) I felt really happy just to get about 5 images that turned out decently, he was absolutely wired for sound that day:) Usually, he's one of my best models. He's really photogenic & normally he's usually cooperative :) Must have been the excitement of Christmas :)

This is so cute!!! I love working with kids, they always have some other ajenda and it often shows...I have a gift basket with $ items and the child picks first, then gives the item to me to hold and then I give it back when we're done.
One other thing I do with children, is they give me 3 good shots and then they get 2 shots however they want...silly face, turned away, silly prop, whatever, but it seems to help allowing them some of their own choices and ideas about how they would like them selves photographed :-)
(Large groups, when we're done, get a silly set of pics and I thrown candy and take a few shots of them jumping, grabbing and hitting the bround for the candy. They LOVE this).

Symona- Your ideas sound so great! Our 3 year old grandson demands I take the belly button, the tongue & the ear & blow them up really large on the camera so he can say "Ooh" :) Then we're set for some pictures :) But I love yours. I'm going to try them! They sound so interesting :) & fun!

Symona- This picture is of Ethan, our 5 year old grandson. For Christmas, we got him the Fisher Price digital camera. He absolutely loves it! He's so serious about it. So.... for his birthday in May, we are going to get him one of the new inexpensive point & shoots :) He will flip out!

I can see it now, 40 years from now, when someone asks him, "What was your first camera?" LOL!

Jayme - I love the pose and the lighting. You just don't see too many child portraits with such dramatic contrast lighting. I think it definitely works with him. I also enjoyed the conversation about how to get children to pose and I will definitely remember the "Give me three and I'll give you two" shots. What a great idea. I don't do too much portrait work ...yet. I'd like to do more.

Just stopped by because I haven't heard much from you lately in the Club.

I love it. You captured the true essence of a "I want to get up and move around" little boy. Good lighting for excellent tones.
