How to add some zip to those colorless shots made against a bright overcast sky that turn out almost black and white: Open your photo in Photoshop
Image>Auto Levels
Image>Equalize
Filters>Stylized>Find Edges
Image>Invert
Image>Equalize Bingo you now have a rather colorful image. If you use the simplifier filter (BuZZ), you can take it a little farther and smooth out those speckles into a wonderful gradient. Filters>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask (I used amount 50, radius 0.7 & threshold 1) Repeat 3X
Image>Image Size>Uncheck Resample and used 72 for Resolution>OK
Image>Image Size>Check Resample and used Bicubic and 750 pixels for width>OK
Filters>Buzz Simplifier>Buzz Stack>Simplifier #1 at 155%
Filters>Shapen>Unsharp Mask (same settings used above but just once) Cock-A-Doodle-Do :0) PS – Just a note that the original photo was shot at ISO 400 so there may be a bit more noise in the bright sky for PS to find when is does it’s equalize, find edges, etc.?? My point is that if you shoot at 50 or 100 ISO you may not get the same results. If you still need info about the simplifier filter (buzz) send me your e-mail address and I’ll send it.

Here is another sample of this technique applied to the sky only. I selected the washed out sky mostly using the magic wand and I skipped the invert step but the rest is the same. Then I buzzed the entire image :0)
