Stacey, thanks very much for your kind comments and encouragement; I use Photoshop CS for my postprocessing; If you don't want to spend as much, Photoshop Elements is a pared-down version and fairly inexpensive for what you get. The first key is to focus on the eyes when taking the photograph. Then in post-processing of this image, I used the shadow/highlight tool, which helped lighten up the dark parts of the image. I also adjusted the brightness and contrast. I then resized and sharpened using unsharp mask and Photokit Sharpener (which allows for selective sharpening) and then USM once more if needed.
