Ice Sculptures - Alturas Lake, ID
Temperatures had warmed to -5 degrees F. as I skied back toward civilization after a sunrise ski on the Alturas Lake ski trials near Idaho's Sawtooth Wilderness. I had passed these frosted trees on my ski out, but the lighting direction didn't highlight the frost, but I made a mental note to check things out on my ski back when they would be side or back lit. The cool cloud formations provided some balance for the composition, and the cottonwood trees were glowing as hoped. Originally taken on Velvia 100, the tones were various shades of blue and white with no other colors, so I planned on rendering the final image in B&W. A polarizing filter was used to help bring out the frosted trees, and darken the sky.

This is SO excellent! A very dynamic shot, with outstanding lighting and exposure! It is quite reminiscent of Ansel Adams. He would visit a spot day after day for about a year, waiting for that Perfect Light, and as we know he often found it. Worth the effort, and I'm glad you went back to catch these glowing trees! Perfect in B&W, by the way! Nice work! And I really like that you explained a bit about the shot.

Thanks Nadya- Luckily I had the chance to go back, but often on short trips or with dramatic weather conditions the opportunity isn't there, but other opportunities open up. Glad you enjoyed the shot.

This is a beautiful shot, Harry! I liked how you converted this to black and white, especially since the color image did not turn out as you would have liked. I also like the fact that you use Velvia, so do I... Really a very well done image and thanks for sharing!

Thanks Gary. I like to only take around 1 type of film for landscapes. I've found with the Velvia (though I haven't tried enough other slide films)that early AM sunrises with snow tend to render the snow a little more magenta than it appeared. WHile colorful skies look dazzeling, shadowed snow sometime looks a little funky. I wonder if you've seen this at all, or if I'm dealing with the reciprocity factor. Harry

Very beautiful. I love the way the clouds look like their air-brushed. Very nicely done!
