Self Esteem, and Lack Thereof

Self Esteem, and Lack Thereof
July 27, 2005 - f828 - Hickory Run State Park - afternoon. Selective focus, portrait mode. I was able to get two shots off before the I Love Me lady asked if she was in my way (my reply "Oh, no - I can shoot around you!" but she had already moved into a different position). They were both such an interesting study in self esteem that I had to go for this shot (the other didn't turn out as well as my focus wasn't right).

  Navin,

Thank you for the comment, I appreciate it. The I Love You lady was a sweetheart and I'm glad I had the "split-second" opportunity to get this shot. I find it very interesting (and it speaks to me as a woman too - I'm a confident lady myself).

Best,
Rachel

Excellent composition! I love the confidence expressed with the patch and with your ability to take the shot! Nice Job.

  Ronda,

Thank you so much. I love the confidence too and was happy to get this. Another weird thing about this shot, in the first - there were eight people in the water (5 were MY family members - hubby and 4 kiddos) surrounding these two ladies (hence my off-focus 1st shot, I ended up focusing on my daughter's back as she was next to the I Love Me lady). They all moved in the right directions (mostly left, but there are two people behind the lady in white) for the second shot. Sometimes, you know what you want in a shot, then get very lucky and are able to get what you envisioned.

Best,
Rachel

  Terry,

Many thanks to you. The f828 is so full of features that I feel I've barely scratched the surface of what it can do (I haven't gotten around to night shots, the burst feature, etc). For the selective focus - press shutter button down halfway to focus (I use the digital focus here) and move the cam (up, down, side to side) until you have the focus where you need it in your pic - then snap the shot. It works really well with portrait mode as pmode usually softens the background but doesn't make it dissapear entirely. It's good for those softer person in the immediate background shots too. Thanks again Terry.

Best,
Rachel

  Tammy,

Thank you! I noticed the patch right away (and thought it was a great statement - I want one!), but it wasn't until the lady in white starting walking out of the water that I actually saw the picture in my mind. Everything happened very serendipitously to make this shot come together.

Best,
Rachel

  Sharon (and Kerby),

Thank you for the nice comments. I'll definitely keep shooting as I think addictions like photography are fairly hard to break!

I like this photo not so much for the image itself (although its good, nice composition/DOP etc) but more for the social commentary. Its great to see an image that isnt just cute or whatever, but says something about the people involved, and society in general. Keep it up.

  Jason,

Thank you for getting "it". I'm a writer, so know that people will take what they need from your work whether it was your intended message or not. Since I've been writing about 9 years, I've learned to understand and accept that particular aspect (without expectations - it's okay if other people see it differently). This shot was a social commentary that spoke to me as soon as the elements came together to make it possible. I write and create other art forms solely for my own reasons, to satisfy my own curiousity and for my own pleasure. Sometimes, I share with others.

Best,
Rachel

  Rachel,

I love this photograph. What a perfect moment and with such expression. I enjoy the fact that I cannot see the woman in white and that patch on the jeans....what are the chances of catching that all? Fantastic.
You have one of the most interesting and adverse galleries I have seen on here so far.
Thank you for sharing.

  Melanie,

As you can tell by my previous comments, I was in a bit of shock in being able to catch it too. I like that the woman in white has a downcast look to her (due to her expression and the softer focus) and the "I love me" lady has the sharper contrast (and the more "confident look"). It's definitely one that I like a lot.

As for the diversity, it's probably because I enjoy and am interested in far TOO many things to do/see/find/photograph everything I want to in one lifetime.

Best,
Rachel

Well I am thrilled to find such a 'story-telling' HUMAN image and now I can't wait to go check out your portfolio of work Rachel!!

Outstanding catch of the day...my kind of image...(I want to sell editorial images- photos/text packages-just have to learn how to write captions, lol.)

I was uploading an older image called "Look Out Boy" into People category, with an EP on it ~ but I can't find it... glad I went to the last page.

Outstanding shot/meaning...
