These are the largest woodpeckers in North America - about 15 inches long. It took about 20 minutes before he could get himself settled enough to be able to fly away. (The funny part of this story is when he took a nose dive to the ground below - he did JUST that! Remember the old Woody Woodpecker cartoons?!) His poor beak was about half covered with sand! I cropped this so that the dirt was gone, and to get more details of his beauty.

I am so sorry this woodpecker was injured...but what can you do?? That's's life. You're captured the fine detail VERY well, Stephanie! And kept the sharpness on the eyes...a lovely pileated woodpecker...up close and personal!

Wow!! what an opportunity to make a beautiful image. I think I'm lucky if I can get within 50 feet of one of these birds. They are so shy. I'm glad he recoved OK. Amazing detail of this beautiful bird!
