Wings of Freedom

|
Wings of Freedom An American Bald Eagle takes flight over the bluffs of the Mississippi River near Alton IL. on a warm December morning. Shot with a 300mm Nikkor, F11, 1/1000 at ISO 400. The only manipulation used was that which is acceptable by journalistic standards.

Just got back from my first eagle outing of the year and thought I'd put this image up and see what happens. Happy New Year!

In 1904 art critic Sadakichi Hartmann condemned contemporary photographers, including Alfred Stieglitz, for gum printing, the glycerine process, and handwork on negatives and prints. So you see, the self-proclaimed "purists" have been whining for a long time. The manipulation question is old, tired and worn out, Bob. It's time for you to find a new hobby horse to ride. Let your work speak for itself. No one is going to be more impressed with your work just because you tacked a "Hey, I didn't manipulate!" blast onto your comments.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I include that in anything I put on such sites, since in the past, people have asked, how a certain image was manipulated and I get tired of explaining that it is not manipulated. Additionaly, I am quite proud of the fact that I do not manipulate anything I shoot and around here that is, for some reason, looked down upon. You and many on this site also need to lighten up and take off your Kreskin hats, since I'm pretty sure most are not able to read other's minds and interpret what they mean. Have a nice day and a happy new year. BF

Excellent image. The synchrony between the eagle’s body with the cloud in the background are exceptional. About the manipulation or no manipulation comment in this case, I feel it might be relevant to some people just like shutter speed or aperture info.
How the image was done its an issue in places like BetterPhoto. You won’t find that info in publications like PDN, or Aperture, because it is not relevant for their readers but it has its value in Popular Photo, Shutterbut, etc, because the audience needs and access those publications looking for that kind of info.
How it was made…we all post that in BetterPhoto…it is an info we all expect.
Great shot Bob…happy New Year.

As a writer and somebody who often makes funny typos I keep my eye out for great typos. Protacio, you wrote "Popular Photo, Shutterbut, etc...". ALRIGHT! Shutterbut is absolutely classic in photo-typo world!BTW, I'm absolutely not being mean. These things strike my funny bone because I do them all the time myself. I thought it was great fun. Shutterbut they shall be known to me from here on out! :-) Karma

Thanks, I've been shooting them for the past 10 years or so and it seems that every year, I get a little closer than the previous year. Can't wait to see what I get ten years from now.BF www.sportsshooter.com

Great shot Bob! I appreciate the fact that if an image is not manipulated you tell me it isn't or that if it is to know what was done to it. Don't forget to post the picture you get in ten years! V/R

Thanks Rhina. I assure you, nothing I shoot is ever altered more than cropping, dodging, burning and minor color correction. If I ever get into the "art" side of the business, that may change, since my master's thesis was on photo manipulation I also understand that area pretty well and how people can get carried away with it and grow to depend on it.Have fun and a Happy New Year to you all. Hi Bob, This photo is great! The colors and clarity make the image easy on the eyes. You're very lucky, I would love to capture an eagle in flight. I see them, but never am at the right place to do so. Hey, just wondering something....why did you pick photo manipulation as a theme for your thesis if you rarely use it? I enjoy photo manipulation, but I dont think I'd ever have the energy to do a thesis on it. eeee gads! great photo!

Thanks, and to answer your question. The whole point of my thesis was "Photo manipulation and resulting news photography credibility." But let's not go there around here. Been done enough. Thanks again. BF www.sportsshooter.com/aavspj

Thanks to you all. I just wish I had known I entered this image in a contest. I thought I was just putting it on the critique area. Oh well, guess it helps to pay attention, huh? Thanks again and keep shooting. BF www.sportsshooter.com/aavspj
