122 mph Vista House

122 mph Vista House
122 mph Vista House
The 1918 Vista House is located along the Historic Columbia River Highway at the western entrance to the Columbia River Gorge. It sits atop Crown Point, 733 feet above the Columbia River. Due to the layout of the land and weather the gorge can become a wind-tunnel and on 1/24/2014, 122mph winds were recorded at the Vista House. Highest ever!

The wind was blowing pretty hard and I had to kick the speed up for hand-holding

Upon completion of the Columbia River Highway (1916), motor travelers identified the need for a “comfort station.” Design engineer, Samuel Lancaster, envisioned Crown Point as the ideal site for “an observatory from which the view both up and down the Columbia could be viewed in silent communion with the infinite.” Vista House also serves as a tribute to Oregon’s pioneers. Some locals at the time called it "The $100,000 Out-house".

Wow, what a view! Must have been quite an effort to get the thing built up there!

It certainly is a spectacular location Denny! Some wonderful photography here, but I too can live quite happily without the wind!

I have grown to dislike wind a LOT. I'd not be a happy person in that place once the view had worn off.

Great shots of Crown Point & the Gorge, Denny! I heard that they clocked a 69 mph gust there 2 days ago while we were having 45 mph gusts in PDX. Beautiful light, color & textures!
