Fox on Peachtree Street

Fabulous Fox on Peachtree Street
Originally designed in the late 1920s as headquarters for the 5,000-member Shriners organization, Atlanta's Fox Theater opened as the Great Depression began. Having survived the Depression, foreclosure, bankruptcy, competition, urban development and age, it now is a designated National Historic Landmark.

An early reviewer for the Atlanta Journal described "a picturesque and almost disturbing grandeur beyond imagination with an indoor Arabian courtyard, a sky of flickering stars and magically drifting clouds, a spectacular striped canopy overhanging the balcony, and stage curtains depicting mosques and Moorish rulers in hand sewn sequins and rhinestones." Yet with all its excessive ornamentation, the Fox maintained a sense of tastefulness and never appeared overstated. Over 300 performances a year are booked in the auditorium.
