Yeah, this is neat. I thought it was infrared too. But am confused due to the comment for the challenge. Di you use a flash? Very fun and different.

I'm guessing this was done using a TTL cable and holding the flash behind the buttons.

I really should have taken a setup shot. I actually thought about it as I was setting things up, but completely forgot. Must be the old age. This was shot with the buttons spread out on a piece of glass that was sitting on top of 4 jars. I had two speedlights under the glass, triggered wirelessly from the camera which was on a tripod, pointing straight down. Here's another shot.
