Red-tailed hawks have various forms of vocalizations that sound like screams. Other sounds that they offer are similar to a steam whistle. They tend to make sounds as they soar and while hunting. They use sounds to be able to offer warnings, to show anger, and to protect their territory. The screech of a red-tailed hawk is perhaps the most widely recognized bird call. In popular films, their scream is used when showing a bird of prey - even if it isn't a hawk! The raspy, scraping screamed "kree-eee-ar" cry of the Red-tailed hawk is used in movies to represent any eagle or hawk anywhere in the world … it's one of the most hackneyed, cliched sound effects in Hollywood.
