The Grand Prize
Well in the end the biggest strongest chick wound up with the biggest most succulent partially digested minnow of the of the meal. Once they are a bit larger the prompting of the parent birds to feed them becomes of greater importance. At a certain point the food goes directly from one beak to the other . That makes it even harder for the weaker less aggressive chicks to survive because they must battle even harder to get a fair share as there are no scraps to pick from the nest ...

Excellent capture, Jack. Agnes wrote about the survival of the fittest situation. I know that's how Nature keeps animal population down. But it's still a bummer for the weaker chick above.

Man, they are so ugly they are cute! Great shot Jack. I just located a rookery on a friend of a friends property, but I think they have all fledged for the year...maybe next year! Are these recent? Part of country? I just got word of thousands of shorebirds in our area so I am off for the day gotta get there before the sun comes up on West Coast. Happy Shooting!
