"Happy as a pig in Poop" is NOT how I read this scene. I don't know this for sure, but it seems to me that this young lady is a 4-H-er who has raised the big sow from a tiny piglet.
-----
They are fast friends, but doubtless-- by September, when the agricultural fairs have ended, their friendship will have ended and the world will have a LOAD of bacon, pork chops, and footballs.
---
Sad for the children, isn't it?

I think it's mean.. I remember a shot in some magazine a few years ago of a girl saying goodbye to her lamb. It just broke my heart.

I think 4H kids must end up with a better idea about how life works. Love this image! I am sure I see a look in the sows eyes that says she really likes the little girl.

Aren't some pigs pets, on the farm? I would think it would be tough too. But it's a different lifestyle, for sure. I hope this story has a happy ending for all! :-)

It IS sad. Can't imagine taking a baby farm animal, raising it till it's fit for the fair, then giving it over to become, as you said, food on someone's table. The tenderness of this scene is truly hard to take, knowing what will follow...

I never did 4-H for that very reason, Michelle. I could never give it up after I had raised it. A very moving capture.

Nice Catch Best case she becomes a breeder otherwise BBQ MEAT.
All these kids are well aware of the future for all the animals they raise. It is a REAL WORLD/LIFE lesson an they are much better off for learning it ..

Sweet capture, Michelle! As one who grew up on a farm and was a 4-Her for years (although sewing was my focus), these kids do love their animals, of course, but they also know from the git-go that the goal is to sell them and (hopefully) earn top dollar to help pay for all the feed and upkeep it takes to get them to the fair.

You always have the greatest state and county fair captures, Michelle, and this one is priceless! Such endearment from both parties - look at the pig's adoring expression! Yes, it does seem sad to us, but many, many parents and kids (even those who don't live on farms) participate in 4H. My computer guru has 4 kids who do it every year; he says it teaches them valuable life lessons...But it would be tough for me.

This is a wonderful storytelling image, Michelle! I've never been a country girl, but I can imagine that growing up with these experiences can be a valuable lesson.
