Things have gotten interesting at our pond this summer. The larger fish had been mostly consumed by a gluttonous Great Blue Heron. This Spring's algae bloom was huge, and yet the snail population is greatly reduced. The frogs have been mating prolifically and tadpoles are numerous. Crayfish are seemingly EVERYWHERE.
------
Two days ago, the first (to my knowledge) Little Green Heron turned up. It was on a dead tree limb that hangs over the pond. Three blue jays were mercilessly chastising him. I thought the heron's face looked absolutely deranged. I would have LOVED to shoot that scene, but alas--my camera was not in hand. By the time I returned, the birds were gone.
-----
But LATER, the LGH returned and from his choice perch atop the pump hose that feeds the waterfall (not running this summer) he had himself a huge feast on tiny fishes.
-----
I suspect he will be calling the pond "home."

OUTSTANDING CAPTURES & NARRATIVE...
I would be spending every waking hour at this ponds side as long as there was light to shoot.
Crayfish will draw Raccoons back if they discover there's enough to keep them interested.
Remember the Little green is VERY capable of taking small frogs & tadpoles they would be no problem for him...

They are all great captures. You are so lucky to have your own pond.

Great series of photos Michelle of the Little Green Heron along with the story that accompanies them. I would definitely have to agree with Jack that if I had this pond in my back yard I would probably be living there also.

In the Heron family, the green one has all the intensity as the bigger blue one when it comes to hunting for food. They are so interesting to watch. You got the timing perfect as he has moved in for the feed. The action is awesome, the reflection remarkable. Beautifully done my friend.

I bet the heron thinks he's in heaven having the pond to himself filled with all sorts of yummy creatures to feast upon. Great series of shots Michelle.

Yes Ann. But he has me worried now. Today I watched him stalking a LARGE bull frog. He should've known that frogs can see behind them with those eyes. The frog toyed with the stealthily creeping little heron until he was within inches.... And THEN, he jumped up right in the heron's face, and I swear, the heron RAN BACKWARDS about two yards. (I can just hear the big frog sneering). But did the heron become "frog shy?" NO WAY. Seconds later he had captured and swallowed (I saw the big lump sliding down his neck) a slightly smaller frog. This little thing can EAT!!

What a marvelous series of images of this LGH, Michelle! And great story-telling too! I am so envious - I would LOVE to have my own pond - like Jack, I would be there constantly! Terrific wildlife capture of him in action, and I love the reflection! Sorry I've been AWOL...working on my laptop gives me headaches so I took a hiatus...PC returns tomorrow evening and then I get to re-install all my photography software. I know you've been there...done that!!

Beautiful bird and reflections, Michelle!! I am a bit prejudiced against frog eating birds but who can argue with Mother Nature?
