Loooong process Cut the player out. filled the background layer with a dark red. Filled another background layer with (radial) red to black. Outlined the player. opened another layer and turned the outline to a stroke (edit - stroke) colored gray. used the smear on 100% hardness to move the stroke line upward like flames. Blended that level on color dodge. used burn and dodge tool to darken and brighten some areas. Duplicated that layer 3 times.
