One of the first steps in repair of a sinkhole is grouting under a building. These pipes are placed around the building, then grout is poured into them. The grout fills the cavity below a house. An engineer and team of men work to carefully watch the flow, so that a building and grounds are not elevated. If the grout becomes too high under a building, the building will rise, move, and could break the foundation, and more damage to the building occurs. Luckily our building was saved just in time, as the grout moved out to the surrounding yard and street, not rising too high under the building. If it had, our building structure would have cracked and the building would have split in half. The front yard was up 6"! It was leveled by man power and shovels. The road was fine. Thank goodness. That was a year ago. These pipes are now being used on other buildings in our community! Here, they are being placed back on the truck for storage overnite and the start of a building the next day. Sinkhole repairs is awesome to watch and learn about...but it definately is not a fun filled excitement if it is YOUR home, like it was ours.. It took the association 5 years from filing a claim to completion of our building (two condos). Sinkholes, along with hurricanes have made insurance in FL a disaster, and too expensive for everyone. It is a sad story of true life here in FLorida!
