~ My Boy Is Just Like Me ~

The lyrics of the song "Cat's In The Cradle" were originally written as a poem by Sandy Chapin who is credited as the song's co-writer. The song is told in first-person by a father who is too busy to spend time with his son. Though the son asks him to join in childhood activities, the father always responds with little more than vague promises of spending time together in the future, peppered with images from nursery rhymes. While wishing to spend time with his father, the son continues to admire him. This shapes the son's future behavior, as shown in the slightly-altered line "But we'll get together then, Dad". The final verse is a reverse of the roles, where the father asks his now grown-up son to visit, but the son responds with his father's line. The father then reflects that they are both alike. This type of father-son relationship is not at all uncommon among our career military who are constantly relocating around the globe.

A child arrived just the other day,
He came to the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay,
He learned to walk while I was away,
And he was talking 'fore I knew it.
And as he grew he'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad,
You know I'm gonna be like you."

1st Chorus:
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon.
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
When you coming home, dad? "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then,
You know we'll have a good time then."

My son turned ten just the other day,
He said, "Thanks for the pup, dad, come on let's play,
Can you teach her some tricks?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do." He said, "That's okay."
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed,
He said, "I'm gonna be like him, "Zel",
you know I'm gonna be like him."

Repeat 1st Chorus:

He came from college just the other day,
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head and he said with a smile,
"What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys,
See ya later ... can I have them, please?."

2nd Chorus:
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon.
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
When you coming home, son? "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad,
You know we'll have a good time then."

Now I've retired ... my son moved away.
I called him up just the other day,
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind."
He said, "I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time,
My new job's a hassle and I might have the flu,
But it's nice talking to you, dad,
It's sure nice talking to you."

As I hung up the phone it occurred to me,
He'd grown up just like me ...
My boy was just like me.

Repeat 2nd Chorus

Oh how true that is Jim. However, my son is just down the street a block now and raising his own family, but we are together now more than ever. Great presentation Jim.

A very handsome portrait of your son Jim! That song, sung by Harry Chapin, always tugged at my heart strings...my husband wasn't able to serve in the Armed Forces but he worked very hard for his family but sometimes I felt he missed some special things of the boys growing up years (and his daughters too)! We do what we have to do and I was able to stay home and care for the family and share everything with my husband!

I would have given anything to have a Dad like you, Jim. Somehow I think this young man is very proud of you!

Fine portrait of your son, Jim! He is a very handsome young man, and you have every reason to be as proud of him as you are! That song tugs at my heart strings, too. Take care!
