Taini, Safari Ambassador Cheetah-OR
This is Wildlife Safaris Ambassador Cheetah "Taini".
This is not the shot I was hoping to get of a Cheetah. Back in the 80s they were allowed to roam freely but now due to the breeding program they keep them away from the public. I had to climb up on a park bench to see over the crowd to get this picture. Now if I wanted to give them $50 they would have taken a picture of Taini and me together....

The licking in the cat world is a sign of affection and bonding. If Taini likes you she will lick your hide off..LOL..
The world's fastest land animal, the cheetah, is a unique and the most specialized member of the big cat family, but it is more like you domestic house cat than the other big cats, purrs just like your house cat. It is also the most endangered cat in Africa
Cheetahs are big cats, found primarily on the African Plains. They once roamed throughout Asia and Africa. Today only about 150 remain in Iran, and about 12,000 cheetahs live in sub-Saharan African grasslands. They are endangered because of decline in prey, loss of habitat, poaching, and being shot as a livestock predator.

Size: An adult cheetah weighs 80-140 pounds, are 48-56 inches long and measure 32 inches at the shoulder.

Behavior: Cheetahs are solitary except when mothers are caring for cubs. Cheetahs live in large territories that often take them outside protected areas. Cheetahs stalk their prey until they can chase it down in a 65-70 mph sprint. An average chase lasts 20 seconds. As hard as they work, cheetahs often lose their meal to larger predators, like lions, leopards, hyenas, and vultures!

Diet: The main prey of the cheetah are small antelope, birds, hare, and warthogs. Cheetahs eat about 6 lbs of meat per day. A good meal is a gazelle, a gnu, a warthog, an impala, or a wildebeest calf.

Amazing fact: Cheetahs can sprint at speeds of 70 mph and accelerate from 0 to 45 mph in 2 seconds and cover 90 feet in one second. At full speed their paw prints are 30 foot apart and they use their tail as a rudder for fast turns. They are the only cat that claws do not retract.

A wonderful touching capture Denny, and thanks for all the info! I had one jump in the back of my pick up at a wildlife park near Sydney, but my film was ruined during processing!

Denny I am so glad you posted...I would have given them $50 just for the priviledge of sitting with him, picture or not. Oh my gosh...I would love to be near this beauty. I will be posting more cheetah and other critters pictures in the days to come of my amazing spring day at the zoo....it truly was a joyous day for me to watch the spring sun wake them up. As zoos go, Denver is by far one of the best relative to humane treatment of wild animals. :-)
PS. But I still plan on a trip to Africa before I die hopefully while I am still able to carry a camera...LOL

This is a wonderful shot Denny! Very special timing on your part!

A few years ago I was to a wildlife refuge here in my province and they allowed us in the cages with the big cats!!! So long as they were under one year old. After that...DONT GET NEAR THEM! DANGEROUS for strangers!

My thrill there was when a young BOBCAT (huge paws!) jumped on my back unexpectedly...They attack from behind I was told afterwards! (OH GREAT!)He didn't use his claws however and I didn't freak out.

Great job Denny!!!

Thank you very much Ann, Douglas and Laura!
Laura I have never had a bobcat set on me..LOL.. but was almost nose to nose with one a couple years ago in my hay barn. We have a local female that usually has three to four kittens but I have not seen her this year so far. And yes they do have huge paws...
