I first photographed the full moon, which appears about five days before the wildlife photography workshop. When shooting the wolves howling, I occasionally looked for compositions that would give me enough room in the sky to add a moon.

Once I selected a howling wolf photo that fit the bill, I opened up my previously shot moon photo, and selected the moon, feathering and contracting my selection until no black sky appears around the edge of the moon.

I then copied and pasted the moon into the wolf photo. At first, it appeared too stark and out of place. So I used the Overlay Layer Mode and reduced the opacity to about 40 or 50 percent.

Then my friend Scotty Stulberg came along and pointed out that this full moon/howling wolf shot was somewhat cliche - that it had been done before. I replied that I had not done it before, so there. But he persisted and in the process stumbled upon this supersized version. By going to the extreme, the image actually became something fun and fantastical. Excellent idea, Scotty - I love the result, even if this concept may be old news to many digital photographers.
