Thank you so much Susan and Colleen! I love these little flowers too. I remember them from childhood, though I'm not sure if we had them in our yard or if they were at my grandparents. These are actually the Johnny Jump-up which are "kin" to the pansy. They're actually very tiny.
When I lookd them up, I found this:

Johnny-jump-ups have much smaller flowers than pansies. They flower heavily and are more heat-resistant than pansies. Johnny-jump-ups are ideal for planting around bulbs and larger flowers. "Helen Mount" has prolific tiny flowers of purple, lavender, and yellow. This is the traditional Johnny-jump-up. Also, they are edible flowers that have a sweet, perfumed flavor and delicate scent. Johnny jump-ups make a pretty addition to salads and desserts. I think I will pass on eating them though!
