Photography Question

Finding the right aperature

My images print out dark, the lighting does not seem to be correct. For the studio lighting course this is what I understand: If the main light is set at f8 then I should be shooting at f8. Is this correct? The pictures seem to look better exposed at f 6.5 or oven better at f 4.5. (see examples). f 4.5 gives a better print.
Should I set the lights at a higher output, say f 11? Am I always supposed to get the right exposure shooting at f8? Seems one would have to consider the darkness of the subject? (Compexion: dark or light)?
