Error 99 with Canon 300D + Sigma 70-300 APO lens

I recently bought the Canon Digital Rebel and overall I'm very pleased with it. I have a Canon 28-135 IS that shoots great, however when I put my Sigma 70-300 APO, I get an error displayed that says Error 99. When I check the manual, it says it's a battery problem. I'm confused. I checked the canon website and did not see anything there that helps. Can you help me? Thanks Jose

Contact Sigma customer service. Odds are that the electronics in the lens are not fully compatible with the new Digital Rebel. See FAQ #22 at Sigma's website:
http://www.sigma-photo.com/html/pages/faqsb.htm#22

Sigma does not license the EF mount and its electronic communication from Canon. They backward engineer it. Mostly they get it right, but when Canon introduces a new body sometimes older Sigma lenses don't work properly with it. Sigma has in the past upgraded the electronics of faulty lenses for no charge.
