Photography Question

recreating a photograph

  My Father
My Father
unknown

Hi all,
this is a photo of my father taken about 15 years ago by a pro photographer who has long since passed. I love the composition, it has just the right amount of depth of field, and the lighting is very nice too. The best thing, however, is anyone who knew my father would say "yes, that's him!" it really depicts who he was.
My question is this: I would like to recreate this look for an assignment I have for the paper. Do you think if I used a 50mm 1.8 lens and composed my farmer in the foreground with his farm and horses in the background, in such a manner not to clutter the scene, and used an aperature of f 8, stood about 6 feet away from the farmer, so as not to cause perspective distoration of his facial features, I would be able to achieve this result? Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

This looks like more than f-8 to me.
Maybe f-11 or f-16 would be more practical with your primary subject only six feet away.

If you want to duplicate the lighting, pick a day with light overcast, if possible.

BTW,...A 50 mm is not essential to minimize facial distortion. A medium-wide angle, (35mm) will also work at six feet away and afford even greater depth of field for your background elements....(Though the 50 will give you a more "natural" foreground to background perspective.)
Just food for thought.

That's a wide angle lens closer than 6 feet. But you could do it with a 50mm. It would look a little different, but you could still do it. And there isn't going to be much difference between f/8 and f/11 with the barn like that.

  Thanks guys,
what do you think.... a 50mm lens or 28 - 90 on tripod set at 35mm?
Or does it really matter? I think i'll practice the two and see what I get.
Thanks so much, both of you. I really appreciate it, cool picture huh? wish I could take credit for it.
Unfortunately, my father never got to see it and he would have gotten such a kick out of it too. It was given to me as a gift after he passed away.
thanks!

If you have a 28-90 why ask about using a 50. Just zoom till it looks like you want it.

The 50 is a faster lens, I have no clue what to expect from the lighting, of course. The fixed focal length seems to produce sharper photos, however, I use a tripod anyway, so the 28-90 will work well.
thanks!
