buy a point and shoot camera to start, and just hit shots everywhere, youll slowlly start to see life as a photograph and see what can make a picture, delete hundreds save some, when your happy go up to a lense interchangable slr.its fun but takes years of practise, mostly self taught,

interests should be artistic stuff.

Skill in recognizing a great image is developed over a period of time. Ability depends on your determination to succeed. What ever your subject, study the various angles, and if shooting outdoor landscapes early morning or late afternoon is the best time. Study the images on various photographers wed sites, including this one. If you are serious about photography I would invest in a good SLR camera with a couple of zoom lenses about 28-70 and 70-250 or 300. Your interest should be what you shoot. Best regards, Charles

You may or may not pick things up quickly. So you can't say it's going to take years of practice. Your personal skills should be an active imagination, be an observant person, and just view the world as anything can make a good photo besides just a personal connection with yourself.
Instead of just looking at the changing colors of leaves in the fall, look at the shape of individual leaves as they curl from drying out.
A lot of people couldn't figure out why I would like to take pictures of people I didn't know.
Notice how changes in the time of day, or changes in the weather have a different feel.
Notice how cars built in different decades have common design elements to them.
Pay attention to people's mannerism, and how subtle changes in facial expressions how a big effect on how a photo can look.
Just start looking for things that would go unnoticed and aren't the obvious crowd stoppers, that would make a good photo if you had happen to be able to catch it with a camera.
Your interest should be what ever thrills you. And that's something you already know. You don't have to ask somebody else. And you don't need somebody else to tell you what it should be.
