Photography Question

Need information on light meters and backgrounds

Hello!
Light meters-I've read about them different times and I know that some cameras have built in meters. My camera is the Canon ELan 7E (I think that's the number without looking). Unfortunately the camera is a lot smarter than I am. How do I read the light meter in it? I would like to buy a hand held light meter. What brand should I start with? I've read about incident meters and another kind? Can I get a meter that reads all lights but at a reasonable price?

Backgrounds--What are the best colors to start out with? I know white, and off white would be good ones to start with, what else would you recommend? I'm very interested in black and white photography, should I use gray/white for those photos? Thank you! TAmmy

  Tammy,
When using the Elan, you should be able to use the fully automatic mode and push the shutter half way down to get a full light meter reading. It will show in the viewfinder as well as on the function screen. Once you get the reading, you can select your exposure in any mode by dialing it in.

Generally speaking, there are incident light meters and reflective light meters (the one in the camera is going to be a reflective). Reflective light meters get their readings by looking at the light bouncing off of your subject. Incident meters actually measure the light at your subjects. Incident light meters are better, and cost more. There is also a light meter that is referred to as a flash meter. In essence, it's an incident light meter. I believe there are light meters that function as a reflective, incident, and flash meter, but I have no idea as to cost.

Sounds like you have a good idea as to the backgrounds already. I'd suggest white, black, and gray for black & white photography. Variations of the intensities of gray are pretty interesting (I mainly use one called Thunder gray).

I hope this helps...
John
