Photography Question

How to shoot traffic trail lights

I would like to shoot light of cars
coming and going on a busy street, the "so called" traffic trails.
I would also like to include some of the buidlings, etc. next to the street.
What are the best ways to accomplish
this type of photo?

Thanks.

You'll need a couple of things...

1. Tripod
2. Cable release (wired or wireless ability to fire the shutter without touching the camera).
3. Set your camera for a long exposure (how long is really a matter of taste and how much light there is).

If there is a fair amount of traffic, you may be able to use a shutter speed in the 1/4 to 1/2 second. If there is a lot of light, you might consider using ND filters to enable longer exposures without over-exposing the shot. I've found that using an exposure in the f8 for 8 seconds for night shots work well...

Have fun...

Also, you should position your tripod mounted camera to record more traffic going away from you than toward you.
(The red tail lights make better light trails than the bright white headlights.)

If you want to include buildings in the frame, try to pick ones which are not too brightly lit, if you plan on using long exposure times.

Try to get a high vantage point, but avoid standing on top of bridges. They tend to move or vibrate, and can result in blurry photos.
