Shooting the Northern Lights

I'm going to Alaska to see the Northern Lights. How or can I take a digital photograph of them. I'm using a Nikon D100.

Hi Beth, I recommend you check out the Website of Art Rosch. He has a lot of experience with astrophotography & photographing the night's sky with a digital camera. If you click the Contact Info button, and type a quick message, I'm sure he'll be able to offer some good advice. Art's website is here:

I have not shot, nor I have seen the northern lights myself. But if I were to try, I would start by:

Using a tripod a tripod, and will want a cable release. Shooting in manual or shutter priority mode, you'll want to set the shutter for a long exposure.

I would start at somthing like 1 second at an open aparature. If the image is too dark, adjust the shutter to 2 seconds, and then 4 seconds, etc until you get it right.

The more time, the more color you'll capture, especially if it is faint. The movement of the light will blur with longer shutters.

Make sure you have no street lights or anything in the shot as they will greatly overexpose that area.

Good luck and please post your results.

  Hello Beth:

I went to China Hot Springs, AK last
year in March and took pics of the
northern lights with a oly c-750 digicam

If I recall I used ISO 800 and 20 sec.
exposure. A tripod is a must.

You shouldn't have any trouble taking
them...(nice thing about digital you
can review the results immediatly....
