Pro Lab Custom Printing

I'm interested in having some of my recent work (35mm film) printed by a pro lab. How does this work? How do you tell them how you want it to look? How do they know how you want it cropped, etc. Also I'm in the middle of nowhere, are there places that I can mail my negatives to or do I have to have them scanned and go digital? Thanks.

The best thing to do is give them a call (on the phone-duh) and ask them for their advice.

Most labs will produce "test" prints for you if the enlargement is big enough (usually 16x20 or larger). When you get the test print back, you then put cropping lines and/or burn or dodge marks on the test print and send it back to the lab for their final print. If you look in recent "Popular Photo" magazines they show you how to do this.

You don't have to scan negative film...yet...in order to get an enlargement made but, transparency film is printed on "R" type paper which is being phased out. So, in the future, if you want a print from a transparency you'll have to get a scan first.

If you're going to make a large print (16x20 or larger) from a 35mm size negative/transparency, I recommend you have a scan made and let the lab perform their wizardry to make the print.

I live in the middle of nowhere also (Nevada) and have to send all of my film out for processing. If I want enlargements bigger than 11x14 I have to send that out too. Usually I have my transparency scanned and then printed. Lot's of emails and phone calls transpire for each print I have made.

Hope this helps...good luck.
