Photography Question

how to turn off white balance

I have been using my didgital rebel for studio shots with hot lights. I can take the same exact shot twice and they can come out completely different. I think the auto white balancekeeps changing the shot so it becomes underexposed. I tried switching the white balance to daylight but still had the same problems. I move my lighting around a lot so taking a test shot for custom white balance every time I move them would be a huge hassle. I used the same set up for my film rebel SLR and every shot turned out perfectly every time. This is frustrating, I just want the camera to turn off its white balance and let me do the work! Please help.

Actually, the shots aren't always underexposed, there are a whole lot that come out overexposed as well. There's no consistency.

If you are shooting in green box or PIC modes, then the camera sets white balance automatically. To set it manually (and keep it from reverting back to auto) you have to shoot in one of the "creative" modes (P, TV, Av, M, or A-DEP).

Set white balance to Daylight (the sun symbol) only if the hot lights are balanced to daylight (~5000°K). Otherwise set it to Tungsten (the light bulb symbol), or use the Custom White Balance function (p. 52 of your manual) to get the proper setting.

P.S. So long as you are using the hot lights as the main lighting source, the white balance will not change if you reposition the lights.

Thanks for the tips Jon. I thought I was shooting in P mode, but probably switched it to the green box without thinking. My hot light bulbs are the photo daylight blue bulbs, would they be better on Tungsten or daylight?
Even if I switch from using between 1-3 hotlights the white balance should not be effected? Makes sense, same light temp.
I like "moody" lighting so the auto balance really messes it up for me. I'm going to give this another try. Thanks!
