If a tripod is what you want, the Manfrotto/Bogen 3221 or its variants are an economical way to get a decent tripod. I use the 'frotto 3437 head, because it has knobs, instead of the protruding sticks that tend to catch on branches and clothing in outdoor situations. That head is quite light and has a bubble level. You might, however, prefer the "stick" controls on conventional heads for quick adjustment in sports shooting.
