Photography Question

Why is portrait photography portrayed as easy?

I often see, read, or hear about beginning photographers wanting to do weddings and portraits.

I wonder why this is perceived as easy and a place to begin? I could maybe see headshots, or certain types of portraits because the cost could be low, or free. And the result may not be deterimental. But, weddings are very important to the folks who are in them. And for someone to just pick up a 35mm SLR with very little experience, and just shoot away...is that how it is percieved, and is that how many couples also pervcive the art?

And, I further wonder if all those wedding albums over the years are full of horrible images taken by beginners?

I'm not bothered. But, it just seems odd to me. Wedding photography is one of the most difficult and challenging things one can do. Not to slight the other types of photography at all, but it is very difficult. But, for some odd reason, there is an illusion out there that it is easy to do.

I wonder why that is?

Jerry

I agree with you Jerry, weddings are tough, very stressful. I will say that again very stressful! But I also believe that it can be a great learning experience for aspiring pros. I do find it sad sometimes that beginners will sometimes take away the market from true artists because they charge less. I guess that is the way it is, that is why I try to avoid weddings and just stick with commercial, stock and landscape.
