Photography Question

Macro for publishing

I'm a biologist and need to purchase a digital camera to photograph nestling birds in close up detail for publishing. Suggestions for a digital camera with great macro capabilities and ease of use in fieldwork would be greatly appreciated.

Take a look at the Minolta Dimage line of cameras. I always read excellent reviews on their Macro capabilities. One thing to keep in mind is that for good macro work a tripod and remote shutter release is a must! The review below on the Dimage 7hi speaks of an external flash designed specifically for macro photography. I don’t know what kind of lighting you will have, but lighting will also make a world of difference. I also dont know your budget or photography experience.

You have a lot of choices for macro work, having a camera that can get close physically as well as having a long zoom in case the camera might scare the birds is nice too. The D7hi takes care of both issues.

  Thanks David!

I left out some important info though. My photography experience is pretty limited. I've worked a bit with a Nikon 4500? My budget is also pretty limited and am looking at a price range of $500-$700. I'd be working outside most of the time under partly cloudy conditions photographing pretty immobile nestlings about 2 inches in length. Thanks in advance for any advice!

This will fit into your budget nicely, and leave plenty of money for a tripod, memory card, batteries, lighting and more.

You have a lot of choices. Can you get close (inches away with the camera) or do you need to take close up shots from a distance?

In either case the Minolta Dimage Z1 will fit the bill. A lot of digital cameras are great at Macro work.

  Hi Dennis,

I own the Minolta Dimage A1 (5mp) digital camera and have taken very nice macro digital mode. I've taken closeups of rings with the gems in full frame.

Typically, you can use close-up lenses to increase the magnification.

The other route to go is to go with a digital body from Canon, Minolta, Olympus, Fuji and check out a SLR dental macro lens to do closeups. Gives you alot of versatility.

Depends on your pricerange.

Hi Dennis- Something in your pricerange is to look at the Fuji Finepix S602 or the newer version of this camera that is out. I can't remember the name of it. I think it's the S700 maybe. Anyway, I have the S602 and it takes phenomenal macro photos. It has a super macro mode that let's you yet just a few centimeters away from your subject and still focus well. You can check out my website to see examples. Good luck.
