The PX640 were mercury-based and have been phased out for environmental concerns. Mercury cells produced 1.3v. You can replace them with similarly sized alkaline or silver-oxide cells, but they are slightly higher voltage ~1.5v and may through the meter readings off. I would not use a 6v replacement.

If you do a search you will find that there are replacment air-zinc cells that reproduce the 1.3v output of the mercury cells, but they tend to have short lives. Another alternative is to buy or make a small voltage regulating adaptor that reduces the voltage of alkaline and silver-oxide cells to 1.3v. See http://www.colyngoodson.com/Pdf/battery%20adapter.pdf and http://www.kyphoto.com/classics/mercurybattery.html for more information, including a list of makers of these adaptors. I also remember seeing instructions for cheaply making your own adaptor, but I don't have the link.
