Photography Question

sports shots with a digital

I have just bought the new Canon Rebel Digital. This weekend I took it to my sons basketball game and was quite frustrated. Granted I have never used a digital camera before and have soley messed around with snap shots around the house up until the time I went to the game. I tried the program mode, then the sports mode, next tv, then manual. I was constantly seeing the aperture blink at me and the pictures were coming out dark or blurry. I rarely seemed to get a correct a exposure with anything higher than 1/200 and I was hoping to try 400, 800 or 1000. I went again later that day to my daughters practice and brought the only three lences I own (all zoom),a 18-55mm 1:3.5- 5.6, a 28 - 70mm 1:2.8, and 75-300mm 1:4-5.6. Can anyone help me as shooting sports with four young kids is very much part of my life. I am fairly new to photography so please explain things as simple as possible. Any hints or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!!!! Thanks, DC

The 2.8 lens is your best one to use. The light inside the gym is not going to be bright enough to shoot without using a flash. And you'll be better off if you have one stronger than the built in flash. Trying to shoot ambient light only, a typical gym will give you about 1/60 at best for iso 1000, and that's at the 2.8 f-stop. So you'll need to use a flash, and get as close to the court as you can.

i DO A LOT OF SPORT PHOTOGRAPHY,NETBALL AND SOCCER,

i USE A CANON 300D ALSO,i WOULD USE THE 18-55 LENSE IT CAME WITH FOR INDOOR NETBALL,i USE THE P MODE BUT SWITCH LENSE TO MANUAL FOCUS,FLIP THE FLASH UP
AND TRY 200 ISO.AND SPEED THE SHOTS UP 1 AT THE TIME,mY DAUGHTER PLAYS NETBALL FOR QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA,AND I GET POSTER QUALITY PRINTS WITH THIS,ALTHOUGH SOME OF MY BEST SHOTS HAVE BEEN FROM MY CANON POWERSHOT A20!!!!JUST GOES TO PROVE IT THE PHOTOGRAPHERS SKILL(LOL)

FOR THE SOCCER I USE A 90-300 LENSE(USB)
AND SET UP THE DRIVE TO TAKE 4 SHOTS A TIME,USE A TRIPOD IF POS,OR LAY FLAT ON GROUND,AGAIN I USE THE P MODE,WITH WB SETTO OUTDOOR,AGAIN MANUAL FOCUS CAN HELP.

HAVE FUN(IT IS FUN YOU KNOW)

NICK.

  Dede,

I shoot pics of our High School band at the games and I have found this to work best. Night lighting: I use a Canon 10D digital which allows me to shoot at a ISO of 3200. I use a 2.8 70-200 lens with a aperture priority setting of f2.8. This fixes the f-stop at 2.8 all the time and the camera chooses the shutter speed. Depending on the subject my shutter speed ranges between 125 and 250 which produces sharp images. I have tried lower ISO settings and have had too slow of shutter speeds and got blurry pics.

Always use highest ISO and fastest f-stop. If your shutter speed is to slow to produce sharp images then you will have to use a flash.

By the way when using high ISO speeds you will have noise in your pics. I remove the noise with a program called Neat Image. Good luck!
