Selling Photos

I am a serious amature photographer and I think that I have some "selling worthy" photos. Where and how should I start my journey of this matter?

Hi Matt: An excellent question! My best recommendation would be to sign up for the excellent online class right here at BetterPhoto: Making Money with Your Photography by Jim Zuckerman.

In any case, a nice place to start is with the "2004 Photographer's Market: 2,000 Places to Sell Your Photographs"... this guidebook is sold in many bookstores and through Amazon.com.

Hope this helps, Matt, and good luck!

Depending upon where you live, you might also start with your local Art Association and ask them about places that will display and sell photography. I have mine in several local galleries, and there are several small shops and restaurants which will display the photographs for sale.

You might also want to approach consignment shops in your area or if you have the time, rent a booth at a local flea market after you frame your photographs. Many art buffs browse flea markets and yard sales looking for "good stuff".

I started selling my work this past Fall at Art and Craft shows. There are many different varieties of shows from small PTA ones to juried shows where you have to submit your work ahead of time to be accepted. Fees to be in these shows range from $20-$75 generally, while some really big shows cost $200 or so.

I have been really pleased with the results I have had. I have always sold several pieces and taken orders for other sizes and frame combinations. I have sold images both framed and just matted in sizes 5x7, 8x10 and 11x14. I have found that there are several of my images that sell very well at every show and others that people always comment on. It has been loads of fun for me and I am going to expand the number and quality of shows I am in this year. I am also going to look into some local galleries once I finish my portfolio.

I have found it very helpful to have a website for people to look at after the show as well.(I have a Deluxe site from BetterPhoto) I haven't sold anything directly from the website yet, but I haven't taken the time to put it in all of the search engines yet either.

Good luck!
